help with laptop purchase please

I need a new laptop but do not want windows 8. Any idea where I can get one.? I use it to pay bills and cruise the internet. Any ideas?

I've been hunting for a laptop and just bought one. I noticed Windows 7 computers at Office Depot.com,HP's own site and Walmart.com. I just finished my first day playing with 8.1 and it is so stupid. I can't find where I can X out of pages.

Mindy...right click below the touchpad. Your pages/tabs should show up at the bottom of the screen. I'm learning windows 8.1 too. Ugh!

ETA...I've added a wireless mouse which is making everything so much easier!!! Not as sensitive as the touchpad and easier to navigate.

You may be able to find a refurbished laptop with Windows 7, which is what I have now. I started out with a refurbished one with XP. I've only had refurbished laptops.

I use to buy refurbished Dell desktop computers and the products were great. The computers were repaired by Dell. Today,a logistics company does the repair work. The quality of the work can be so so. I just buy new products.

The OP should look at Dell or HP's site for a Window 7 machine.

If you have the desktop with all the colorful icons, just click the "desktop" icon and you will get your old desktop back with the X to close out and everything.

So easy once you find that out. It took me 14 hours to find it and it was right in front of me. Of course, I didn't know it was there so I wasn't looking for it. LOL

Just bite the bullet and get Win8. It isn't hard at all.

Toshiba has quite a few new computers with Win 7 on their web site. But Win 8 is easy to use if you check out free tips on getting started...do a web search and you can be up and running in a few minutes.

There is another thread re: Windows ......... So many folks out here are having trouble with 8. Allegedly. There also was an article regarding 8 and all of the problems in our newspaper several+ months ago. I would suggest tracking down Windows 7. Less stress and aggravation. I heard that 7 's prices are skyrocketing, and very difficult to find because of all of the (allegedly) problems people with 8 are having.

I believe that the article said that 8 was developed for touch screen only to begin with. (Allegedly) Wish I could find that article, darn. Very interesting, and, at the time of reading it, I was very glad that I bought Windows 7 instead.

I love my 7, and had no problems to begin with. Just perfect! Too many folks are still trying to 'learn' 8. People who have top jobs using computers, etc. Even the folks at the various PC stores were/are having troubles trying to figure 8 out. Customers were tired of having to carry in their '8' laptops into the stores for help.

Bottom line, if you are an average non-tech person (such as myself), try to get a Windows 7. No-stress type of PC. Just turn the thing on. At least there is a bar button to turn it on with. Some 8's don't even have that, from what friends are telling me. Allegedly, of course.

I don't believe it. Maybe the people you know can't figure it out. It's not that way with my friends.

I have windows 7 and love it. I'll never buy Gateway again though. Their customer service is TERRIBLE!! Next one I get will be a Dell. Good luck to you op!

I had purchased a laptop w/ 8.1 and it was okay, just too much time for me to have to search how to do certain things I had been accustomed to doing effortlessly. I don't need the frustration and don't have the time currently to spend re-learning.

As far as someone stating they don't know any of their friends who are having problems with 8.1, I am wondering what age group they are talking about. I know at least 8-10 people that have no intentions of using 8.0 / 8.1 after having so many issues with relearning everything and have returned computers due to them being 8.1. It is pretty well documented that many people don't care for it. In fact, I have never heard anyone say they have never heard anyone not liking the new Windows 8.0, kind of puzzling.

I purchased a Windows 7 at Costco (Dell) and like it very much. I can see some benefits to 8.1 but when I have the time and desire to re-learn everything, I will upgrade to it. Right now I am a very happy camper and am back to getting my work done on my laptop very quickly...it is just smooth sailing.

Well said! And just imagine the frustration that many seniors are going through, trying to figure it all out. As I said in previous post, the company who brings back Windows 7 will be very much appreciated along with making $$$$.

Personally, I can figure Windows 8 out just fine, I just don't like it.

I predict it will go the way of Vista sooner rather than later.
