I will be moving to a condo this month and the previous owner had vertical blinds which I am fine with but I have never had them so I thought I would ask you ladies, can I purchase the blinds myself and hang them or can you only purchase them in a kit (along with the hanging hardware which I don't need)? Does my question make sense (please know I will not be insulted if the answer is no)?

Sorry but after looking at places like Home Depot and Walmart I wasn't sure I understood exactly what my options were . . . many thanks for any assistance anyone can lend!

You can purchase the blinds with the hardware and just pop them into the old hardware if it was left behind. Or, you can just purchase the slats ( difficult to find in some areas).

when I had them on a patio door years ago, I would replace mine every two years or so and just pop the whole new blind into the the wall mounted hardware that was already in place.

be advised that if you buy " plastic blinds",they will need replaced more often if they are white or off white. They turn yellow.

You can purchase replacement slats. We have had several dogs, and only our youngest one has ever shown an interest in the blinds, so we have replaced quite a few slats. I keep some on hand now. I believe I ordered a dozen or so from a seller on Amazon.

If there is nothing wrong with the clips that hold each slat then just buy the replacement slats that are the same width as the original ones. I suggest you remove one slat and take it with you to the store. They will help you get the right ones to fit your windows. Some need to be cut so they aren't too long. Others are made of fabric and may need hemming which is usually a custom item.

Oh ladies bless you for all your help! I was worried my message didn't make much sense as I have no experience with these window coverings. The previous owners left behind the original hardware so it sounds like I can look for the replacement slats (and hopefully someone can help me accurately measure what length they need to be). I have leftover paper blinds from where I am now so I can use those in the meantime but with the warmer weather coming I would like to have these operational relatively quickly.

Thank you all so much for your help!

I went to Home Depot a few months back with measurements for purchasing window blinds. Those measurements had to be accurate and the fit was perfect. I think it helps if you have good measurements and get ahold of experienced salesperson. After some questions and maybe more than one trip you will be able to tell that person helping you knows what he is talking about. Don't be in hurry and ask questions. Love my verticals.

I have vertical blinds and I hate them. I can't replace them either because every unit in the building I live in has to look uniform from the outside. I have floor to ceiling windows. If I want the window open the blinds become unruly and flap all over so I have to tie them back. That's a problem if I want the window open at night and morning comes and the sun is streaming in my face. Its really annoying. If I had my way I would have horizontal blinds so I can easily move AND close them and keep my window open without the sun shining through without the flapping noise and the need for ties. That's my story you may have average size windows where that won't happen.

When we sold our house the buyers offered to purchase the window covering. I had not planned to take them anyway so I told them I was leaving them behind for free. They were ever so happy.

We have vertical blinds in our camper over the sliding door.I hate them because they are in a hallway where we walk all the time so they are always getting brushed against and moved. I am always trying to get DH to agree to take them down and put a curtain with grommets at the top instead. We really need privacy in the door because it faces right out to the street.
