Shower Curtain Upkeep

Since new washing machines prohibit washing water proof items and I don't want to run to the laundromat, I am attacking soap scum on liners differently. After cleaning tub and walls, I leave the liner hanging in tub and spray with Barkeepers Friend and then wipe down with microfiber cloth. Spray down with hand-held and let dry. Feels and looks clean. Hope someone finds helpful.

I have a new washing machine-front loader. I wash my water proof shower curtain removal liner.

Re-read the manual. Nothing in there about not washing water proof items. If it did, I would have returned it.

My water proof curtain itself never gets dirty or wet.

My Kenmore prohibits and so does son's. Perhaps it's not as common as I thought. Anyway, I find this easier than taking down.

Barkeeper's Friend comes in a spray now? I have the scouring powder, never saw a spray but if so going to look for it.

@Twins Mom, I never heard of not being able to wash a plastic liner. I gave up on those (plastic liners) a long time ago for the fabric liners which I like much more. They wash beautifully. LM

The reason behind not putting waterproof things in the washer is because the machine can become unbalanced. But I do it anyway and keep an eye on it while it goes into the spin cycle. Sometimes I have to move the items around inside the washer so they don't get out of balance.

I always turn on a standing fan to blow on my tub or shower after using for a couple of hours. I never have any mold or mildew form doing this year round. The shower curtain stays clean as well.

The plastic liners are usually washable. It's the washing machines that can't handle them because the plastic liners cause the machines to get out of balance.

I wash mine (I use cheapie vinyl curtains) in my new washer.

I think there was a time when I was committed to wiping them down after each use, but I quickly bagged that. I try to open it up after use and leave the fan running awhile.

Just curious--why does a very lightweight shower curtain liner cause a washing machine to become unbalanced? I've always had top loadersand in almost 40 years of doing laundry I have never had a washing machine become unbalanced.

Because the waterproof plastic prevents the water from draining. The water gets trapped in pockets within the curtain causing it to get unevenly distributed and can become heavy on one side or the other. @kaydee50

You can also wash and rinse your shower curtain in the bathtub.

I have a PEVA shower curtain that is also a liner, and this has worked well.

I've lived in apartments without a W & D for many years, and don't always need to use the laundry rooms

I have a newer washing machine without an agitator. I wash my shower curtain liner with a few bath towels and never had a problem with the washer becoming unbalanced.

Oh I wash just about everything in my newer HE front loading washer! If anything I need clean....I throw it in my washer! A little shower curtain? Easy, throw it in! Been doing this all my life and have never had a fail!

Me three, and in between purchases just spray it down every Sat. morning with bleach cleaner from the dollar store. Plastic is just plastic and not worth any effort to save, but my fabric shower curtain on the outside of the shower is another matter.

I have always washed the shower curtain in my washing machine - used a little bleach on it. Now I buy the hookless ones from QVC and they are fabric and work very well.
