Making A Baby Rag Quilt

I got inspired by your post about the rag quilt you were making. I've been watching a lot of videos on line and stopped into the fabric store to poke around. I think I will pick up what I need next week. Do you have any words of wisdom for me after making your quilt? They have special scissors (kind of ratcheted or something) to snip the edges. Did you use those? I guess I need a cutter thing that looks like a pizza cutter and a plastic ruler thing. Any suggestions for me would be appreciated. TIA

This is a good video explaining how to make a rag quilt. She is making a baby quilt, but you could make it any size you want.

Welcome to the hobby of quilting. It's lots of fun, but also expensive. Once you buy all the equipment you need, you'll want to make more than just one quilt.

I do lots of quilting as a hobby and can answer questions if you would like. Or you can wait for 151949 to reply. Don't want to step on any toes.

I am not a very experienced quilter but I did make 4 rag quilts of different sizes last year. I enjoyed making them! I found that the little scissors was VERY helpful in creating the cuts for the "ragging" effect. I would highly recommend it. Sounds like you will get lots of help with others. @chvall99 Thank you for responding. I have watched several videos for making rag quilts and have found them to be very helpful. Also, the place where I am going to get the fabric has several blankets displayed and apparently the saleswoman makes them and has offered her help. I reached out to 151949 because it sounded like it was her first quilt and it was for a baby. Mine is also. I have waited years for a grandbaby and my daughter and son in law are adopting. And she's my very own granddaughter. Yeahhhh. She will be a year old in a few months, so I want to make a very special birthday present for her.

@pattypeep If you buy a rotary cutter and the acrylic ruler don't forget to also get the cutting mat.

Quilting is an expensive hobby.

@CelticCrafter Thank you. I went on Amazon and the mat, rotary cutter, and ruler are about $38. Is that about right? Or reasonable.? I will look for the special scissors.

@CelticCrafter I found another set for under $30 and the special snippers for under $17. I think that $47 for a hobby is worthwhile. I will have fun selecting the fabrics and I can get started.

You need the rotary cutter and mat for cutting the squares, the ruler to cut the right size quilt blocks, and the rag quilt snips (the ones that aren't level so you can cut the strips. You really need them all to do the job without getting a really sore hand from working with small scissors on many layers. Hobby lobby and JoAnn's have good coupons and sales to get you started. Oh, watch some videos on youtube. They will give you a great visual guide.

@Scooby Doo....I see that you are a quilter...I have quilted off and on for years...I learned (using that word loosely) long before it became popular and all the rulers, rotary cutters were even on the market, templates were cut out of cardboard...I can sew and hand quilt, it's the cutting of the fabric that I find difficult

I spend so much time trying to cut the fabric correctly that I get very frustrated.

I made curtains this summer for my kitchen using upholstery fabric (I have a love of fabric) they turned out nice but I had to recut the fabric because there was a 'dip' in the center and I swear I had lined up the salvages before cutting...again any cutting tips you can share? Thanks!

@Tigriss Thank you for your help. I ordered everything from Amazon today. This coming week, I will shop the fabrics locally. I am excited to start my new hobby.

@pattypeep I hope you enjoy your new hobby. Youtube has many helpful videos from knowledgeable people. I too have been quilting since before it was popular and the tools are what they are today. Using the tools makes it go so much faster and more accurate. I've done quits by hand and machine. Machine makes it more accurate and faster, but by hand has more character, code for mistakes with flair. Rag quilts are easy and fun, plus they get you into the hobby and may lead to more quilts in your future. Happy quiting!!!

@Kindaglitzy If you are at all interested in sewing, I hope you look these up. 151949 posted about making one and I asked what she had learned from her experience, but she preferred not to answer. I got all of the pieces cut out yesterday and ready to sew today. This one is for my new granddaughter. I bought the material yesterday from Jo Ann's because the flannel is 50% off and I am going to make one for my "granddog". I didn't realize flannel was so expensive. If you do quilts, be sure to invest in the proper tools. I bought everything at Amazon and it was under $50. If one continues to quilt, I feel it is a bargain since it's a one time purchase.

I just saw this post for the first time.In the future when you want someone to see a post you would want to put # and their name so they are notified it is there.I don't really have anything to add to the others here. I enjoyed making mine but the snipping was awful.I did not buy the special scissors - but someone loaned me hers. It is a very easy project.

@151949 Your call name was in huge letters in the title. I didn't see how you could possibly miss it, so of course I assumed you chose to ignore. I believe you only see when you are mentioned in a post if you happen to be live on the forum at that time. At least that is what I've observed. I hope your quilt turned out well. @pattypeep - Hi, I just found this post and wanted to let you know that I've been quilting for a while and have done a rag quilt. I haven't read all the previous posts but wanted to let you know that my one tip would be when drying the quilt for the first time, clean out your lint trap frequently, because it can fill up fast with this type of quilt.

Congratulations on picking up quilting, I love it and decided one day I was going to learn and I did. It's fun, relaxing, and rewarding! Let us know how the quilt is going and post a picture when you finish. Happy quilting!!!
