We've been in our home for almost 3 yrs. and it's time to replace the blinds. I have six windows all facing the same way. I need some ideas as to what kind I should buy. I would love to hear your ideas and what kind you have. Thank you.

I have 19 Levolor brand 2"blinds in my home. I purchased them off the shelf from Lowes and they cut them to my desired widths. They were priced anywhere from $35 to $60 per blind. Not too expensive. I have been very happy with this brand and especiallly like having 2 strings to open and close the veins. I had previously put a cheaper brand blind in my home and they yellowed, became brittle and some of the wands broke off. I should have gottten Levolor to begin with. They are not fun to clean but no blinds are. I still use curtains or valances with my blinds as I like some color around my windows.

Shutters. Good at keeping heat and cold out. Got them through Costco. Pricy but so worth it. I would never consider having drapes, curtains or anything like that. I have animals and live in Arizona so even though it's dusty curtains would be worse than shutters.

For my living room in two different houses I've bought custom blinds with thicker slats at my local JCPenneys. They have a great selection of offerings. Sometimes they go 1/2 price. At my Penneys the sales ladies in that dept have been there for years and are quite knowledgeable.

If you're near one, check them out.

For more simple blind replacement I've just gone to my local Home Depot, Lowes or Target for replacements. But you get what you pay for and they are not nearly as good quality as the customs.

I have Silhouettes by Hunter Douglas throughout in my cottage. They are absolutely wonderful! They are pricey but a few times a year they have a great sale and that's when we got them. Got almost $1,000 off! They give your room a oh so soft hue yet you can still see out of them. Best purchase ever!

There is so much info needed in order to make a decision on window coverings. Do you battle cold or heat where you live? Sun? Are your windows weather worthy or are they drafty? Is you home decorated modern? country? traditional? Do you need to stop outside noise? What about privacy? IMO - how you answer these questions will have more to do with what you put on your windows than anything else.

We needed primarily privacy as we have very close neighbors, we also have to deal with the Florida sun and the heat.We chose shutters that we can open & close separately top to bottom so we can keep the bottom closed for privacy but let the light in the top, except our bedroom which faces south so it needs heat & sun control but there is nothing out there to need to close up for privacy so we have the tops closed and keep the bottom open for light. For here in Florida shutters are a wonderful choice. Pricey initial investment but over time it pays off. All our neighbors who bought curtains or shades when they moved in 6 years ago are already replacing them because the sun ruins them so quickly.

Shutters are the way to go. They keep the cold and heat out. There was a $500 energy efficient tax break awhile ago available (which I missed out on, of course). I love the ones I had installed a couple of years ago, and would never go back to blinds or curtains.
