Crocheting

I got hooked on watching one of those shows yesterday. Hook, pearl, double crochet, single crochet, etc. it was just so relaxing to set and watch that. I dabbled in that years ago. Have a hook rug I can do this year too.

With new puppy still being trained, no time for my zillion piece puzzles, but I'll get back to that.

Maybe someday, I'll start all over on that again.

Are you doing any start overs on some hobby or talent you might want to be working on?

I just picked up some new yarn and a pattern for knitting. I live in central Texas, where it's often hot, which isn't ideal knitting weather. I knit more late fall (it usually doesn't even think about getting below the 70s here until late November) and the winter.

@ChynnaBlue Just fyi in the event you haven't been "yarn" shopping lately..... there's now cotton bamboo, linen, silk and a host of fine weight ("fingering" or 0-1-2 weight) yarns available that would be ideal for Texas weather! Even here in the frozen north I rarely work on afghans or other large items in the summer---only when I'm COLD so the project can do double duty of keeping me warm at the same time.

You have the headquarters of Crochet! and Crochet World right there as your neighbors. Great idea / pattern mags.

I know, and I love all the different varieties, but I am a worsted girl. I don't like to worry about gauge and I get bored easily, so I knit a lot of scarves or a baby sweaters and don't use fingering weight because I would go crazy before I finished something like shawl. I've tried socks, but I am not good at circular knitting and suffer from Single Sock Syndrome, so I have never finished a pair.

I'd rather spend more money on a really good skein of worsted yarn, be it hand-dyed or some yummy fiber, and make one scarf out of that than anything else.

I just got a pattern for some ridiculously long wrap, like Doctor Who Scarf long, and bought half the yarn recommend and I figure I might not even use all of that. If I make a third of it, that will be more than enough for me.

I taught myself to crochet using a book one New Year's Day when I didn't want to watch football. It's really quite simple. Reading and following the directions is another story. Most beginners need some help with that.

I made my son a slouchy hat for Christmas and I crochet baby blankets. I want to crochet an afghan soon.

I like crocheting; it's very relaxing.

I love the needle arts-knitting, crochet, pin loom weaving, tiny loom weaving,, rigid huddle and Said I: I am a Jack of all trades and a master of none. My latest venture is crochet tatting: you can see what that's about on YouTube and Annies's.

I live in Florida, but we still get chilly weather and I still make cardigans and wraps....lacy or open work is worth exploring. Of course, there is a never ending shortage of home decor items to make: baskets (yes, you can crochet really cool baskets), market bags-lamp shades, table runners etc....

If you don't want to mess with gauge, and you enjoy making scarves and Afghanis, there is a need for those all over the country. Retirement homes, homeless shelters and Oncology centers of all kinds would welcome such gifts, and you would have a ball making them.

"Knit and Crochet Now" also has a fantastic web-site where you can view entire episodes, get free patterns and learn new techniques. I will close with their quote: "Make time for yarn today!"

I taught myself the basic stitches of knitting and crocheting. I never got too advanced, to make anything that required much skill. I did make a big blanket for DH when we were dating, a baby blanket several years later, a bunch of scarves for people, and many dishcloths. I always thought those dishcloths were the best. I've gotten away from it the last few year, but it might be time to make more dishcloths again one of these days.

Hi Jeanlouise! Home made dish cloths are the best! You will be happy to know that Mary Maxim and Herrschener's sells wonderful cotton and patterns for dish towels. I don't remember which one has it, but one of them offers a yarn called "scrubby" meant for making scribbles for your dishes-not my thing, but it's out there!

I'm a member of a Facebook group called Crochet Playground.

If you're interested, check it out. If you already crochet you will get some wonderful ideas and if you don't already crochet you will be inspired to learn. My dearest friend taught me the basics a couple of years ago and I learned the rest from YouTube and other websites. It was life changing for me - it's meditative and so rewarding.

I make blankets for Project Linus and many of the women there crochet works of art to give away to children and babies.

They are really heirloom quality blankets in every color/stitch you can imagine. I am always in awe of them.

Mine are just simple little fleece blanets. I keep thinking I will learn to crochet, but it would take me forever to do one blanket!

Witchy, look into Tunisian crochet: the work goes fairly quickly and you can do all sorts of thing from creating fabric that looks like knitting to doing cross stitch on the fabric you create....it's pretty cool!
