Need Lowes kitchen cabinet recommendations

We’re going to remodel our kitchen and we’re looking at having Lowes do the job. They have various cabinet makers – Kitchen Craft, Diamond, Shenandoah and two others. We want to get the best one but the salesman kept saying they’re all equally good and it depends on what you choose. My husband doesn't believe that. Do any of you have recommendations as far as the best cabinetry at Lowes? Thanks.

We have used KraftMaid in a remodel and were very happy with the quality. Shanandoah's quality also looked very good.

I don't recommend you get Lowe's at all to do your kitchen. They use different subcontractors. I had a person who worked at Lowe's tell me not to get them to do my kitchen. You will be much better off getting a private contractor to do it.

Go with all HARD wood. I say this because we looked into using Lowes and Home Depot and they use cabinets with pressed board inside. They also used veneers which looke fake to me. I found a man in my town that sells and installs hardwood cabinets. I was thrilled when it was done and my neighbors used him, too. Just remember when your doors start coming out of the hinges, there are only so many times you can sc*ew them back in before the pressed wood just gives out. Please do yourself a favor and look into real hardwood cabinets. They were the same price, too. They will last so much longer.

I agree with the other poster -- don't use Lowe's. I'd look for a local company.

I disagree about using Lowes - they put siding on my house and couldn't have done a better job. Cleaned up after themselves, were extremely polite, and the company called me regularly to make sure the job was up to my standards.

Every Lowes is different and each contractor is different who works for Lowes. My Lowes has an installer who has worked for them for 20 years (in addition to his own company), he is excellent. Have to judge on an individual basis.

You need to find out who Lowes is going to contract out to do your kitchen. Then you must do research on the contractor. I would start w/Yelp & Angie's List. Then ask around for "recommendations."

As others have mentioned, each Lowes is different as well as Home Depot.

Honestly, we used a kitchen designer.His designs were unique and inspired. He made every inch of our kitchen useful.The cabinets were all 100% red oak and beautifully constructed. I wanted a country kitchen and he delivered with bead board cabinet doors and other styles that were appropriate to what I wanted. In the end - he was only $1200 more than just having a contractor put in a standard kitchen -and he doubled the function of my small kitchen. I would never redo a kitchen without using a designer to plan it for me.

If it's within your budget I would look at companies that custom make them. They will be better quality and be all wood. Plus they will help you with a designer .

We had Lowes install our cabinets and countertop about ten years ago and they did a great job. We picked Shenandoah. We looked into having a private contractor and the price was outrageous (about double) I did order my kitchen sink and faucets online because it was cheaper and I liked the selection better but Lowes installed them also. We did save about $1000.00 by taking out the cabinets and sink ourselves. No sense paying them for something we can do.

I, too, opted for KraftMaid from Lowe's, and was extremely pleased. I did not want the cheapest, nor the most expensive cabinets. These were suggested to me as the best value for my money. I purchased over 10 years ago, and they still look brand new, and have functioned impeccably.

The cabinet doors shoild be solid wood and look heavy.

Open the door and knock in the wood. Does it sound solid? Are there any seams showing a filler?

What do the shelves look like? Are they solid or plastic.

How are the drawers fastioned on the ends? Dove tail are the most reliable seams and don't pull apart.

Over the winter, you may get a cabinet maker to make custom cabinets because they work less and are looking for work.

When we built this house 35 years ago, we bought Kitchen Craft cabinets thru Lowes, that were installed by our builder. The cabinets looked very nice when they were new, but did not wear well thru the years.

We remodeled our kitchen last year, and had a local cabinet maker make the cabinets to my specifications. I have beautiful, sturdy cabinets that will be here after I'm long gone. I absolutely would not go with cabinets thru Lowes.

35 years is a long time ago. I have no idea what Kitchen Craft cabinets are. Our remodeler also uses Kraft Maid. One can research the quality, dove tail drawers, wood doors, etc.

I would always suggest shopping around and go with whatever you think is the best.

We put in a sizeable wet bar in our old house. It turned out quite nice. We picked out and ordered cabinets from Lowe's but my dh installed them. I've heard horror stories about their help. My friends just had their kitchen totally done by Lowe's and they weren't that happy. The installers messed up in many places and had to come back to repair their errors. Good luck.

About 20 years ago we put new cabinets in our house. We went with a local cabinet maker and they were solid wood. We are getting ready to move in the spring and they still look brand new. No scratches or anything. The only thing is they are oak so they look. Like from the 80's. I say If your budget can swing it look for a local cabinet company. They will be able to get maximum space out of what you have and a designer will help you.

I haven't had Lowes do anything major like a kitchen remodel, but on the smaller jobs, their contractors have made a mess of things.

I would go to Angie's List where you no longer have to be a member, read reviews and pick a few kitchen remodelers and get estimates from them.

I have KraftMaid cabinets in my home office. They are well made and still look nice after 10 years of use.
