Does anyone ever replace just the mattress and not the box spring? Is this even possible? Never see them priced this way?

We have a Serta Perfect Sleeper about 8 years old. Back then they had plush fiber tops. The problem is that the pillow top has settled into our body forms. It is packed down and we now sleep in our own little trough.

I have tried a couple of toppers to try to fill the the indentations but the topper just falls in a mimics the squished down areas.

Yes, I see on some online sites they have mattresses up for sale and it will specify, mattress only. I am sure the mattress stores in the neighborhoods will be happy to sell you just a mattress.

It's been a long time since I replaced a mattress - snowbird and uss mine only half a year annually. But this question sent me to Google - very confusing, but 2 things stood out to me. One is that there has been a change in the way most box springs are now made (who knew?), and the other is that you can buy your box spring separate from your mattress as long as doing that doesn't violate the warranty on the mattress or, in some cases you don't even need a box spring.

Mattresses are now so expensive, I'll be reading lots and shopping at a good dealer before I do buy because if the article I read is accurate, my experience is totally out of date.

Many memory foam mattresses are sold without box springs. You don't really need them. The mattress would be fine on a platform or on the Floor? The springs give it height, nothing else. RVs are always sold with the mattress on a platform that lifts for storage beneath.

To answer the question, I think it depends on how old your box springs are. When we needed a new mattress, we bought everything because our box springs were 25 years old and had we not bought a new box spring, our warranty on the matteress was voided.

Regarding a mattress warranty, my DH and I got a brand new mattress under warranty. We bought our mattress in 2015. It was a pillow top mattress. We bought a brand new box spring to go with it. The company delivered it, set everything up and removed our old set. Not long afterwards, the bed started to make amost like a popping noise on one side everytime DH got into bed. Then when I would sit on the foot of the bed, it was making creaking noises. I was not happy because the bed was brand new and shouldn't have done that.

However, I never called because I was ill, going through some stuff and this wasn't at the top of my list. Fast forward to a few months ago and I noticed the cover that is just stapled to the bottomside of our box springs was all hanging down. I could easily have stapled it but I was afraid to do anything and void the warranty so I called. Then I complained about the popping and creaking. Someone came out and they fixed the cover on the box spring and we got a brand new mattress because they said that shouldn't be doing that, something was wrong.

We got rid of our box spring and mattress several years ago.

Our new bed will have a "buddy board" (maybe not the correct name) but considered an upgrade from slats, which we have in our present bed.

We have been very happy with the foam mattresses from QVC and a few other sources.

I use a gel foam topper over the foam, and HAVE used an additional CuddleEwe, but we're sleeping so well on our present combo, we haven't needed the CuddleEwe, but we would invest in one immediately if either of us had any more trouble sleeping.

@millieshops wrote:

@kivah Definitely a ploy - but rarely honored also because so few mattresses are well cared for from the get go. But they are like any other warranty - if you happen to meet the criteria, you'll be one of the rare ones.

I rarely ever pay extra for a warranty on anything and that has worked out well for me. Although when I bought the car I am now driving (used, but in certifiable condition), I did add an extension to the existing warranty. That time I more than doubled what it cost me.I've been driving just shy of 50 years now and can't think of another time a warranty would have paid off.

@millieshops

I also never buy warranties --- except I bought an extra 4 year warranty from Lowes for my washer and dryer. It was only $89 each -- so it was inexpensive. I did have to call twice to fix the washer. More than paid for itself. Most of the time, it's cheaper to purchase new appliances than repair them. I also bought an extra 4 year warranty from Costco on my large flatscreen Samsung tv (the warranty was under $100). I have my tv almost 2 years now and no problems.

Talking about Mattresses: They give long warranties to get u to buy ---- the only time I would buy a mattress on-line would be from Costco. Any problems, they take it back. Trying to deal with manufacturers who give the warranties (on-line or on the phone) is almost impossible. That's why I would only buy a mattress from Costco or a local mattress store. Any problems, u could go over there and talk to someone. Just google "mattresses" all read all the BAD reeviews about mattresses and warranties!!!!! They don't make them like they used to.

I just bought a new mattress without a box springs in August. Got it from Helix sleep online. They are made in NYC. It is a foam mattress that is custom made per your needs. Don't need a box springs for it, can be on the floor, used with box springs you have or slats on a bed too. There is a100 day test period, free delivery and they will come get it if you don't like it and refund your money. Have been very happy with it. I got the full size and the cost was $800. Is guaranteed for 10 years too. No tax for me either. I am in WA state. Was looking at the other beds like sleep number, tempurpedic but they were in the $1600 ranged--too much for my budget.
