Granite Counters

Has anyone sealed their granite counters themselves? Is it difficult or easy? Do you suggest doing it or would it be wise to hire someone. Any idea of cost.

It's very easy and inexpensive to do it yourself. You can get the right products from Lowes or Home Depot. Sorry; I don't remember the brand names.

@coffee drinker Yes I seal all my granite countertops myself. Kitchen and bathrooms. I use Granite Gold brand of Sealer. I also use their daily use cleaner and also their polish. Once a year I seal it. You apply it a few times, drying in between coats. I don't use the counters for a 24 hour period to completely dry it. They are virtually maintenance free.

I slap some on every year and a half to two years. Honestly, I just haven't had an issue with keeping these granite counters clean and we've had them for at least 15 years. They are dark colored, and get wiped down several times a day with a damp rag.

We seal them one in awhile but it certainly isn't a big deal and isn't at all expensive. It's not something I stress over. Ever.

Don't make a big deal about sealing granite. Its just like using a cleaner. Put the solution on and wipe! So, so easy.

DH and I are in the process of looking for new countertops. I was 100% sure I wanted quartz. However, after shopping, I'm now pretty sure I want granite. I'm just not liking any of the colors of quartz. I thought granite might be too busy for me but I'm shocked that is what I'm drawn too. We've just begun looking so maybe that will change.

Anyhow, my husband was concerned about the sealing of granite every year. I think he was under the impression it was some big process. I'm glad to read this.

I've probably had granite for about 5or 6 years. We haven't sealed it yet. I do use a granite cleaner about once a month. Still looks great.

I have a spray on granite sealer. I don't even know the brand. I do it once a year - but I know I've gone longer in between.

Granite, IMO, is practically maintenance free.

Way overkill with your sealing process. Unnessary to seal with multiple coats and you never need to let it dry for 24 hours? It dries when you wipe it with a soft cloth, boom, done. I put all my things back on my counter right away and am about my business.

I've had granite counters for 18 years. I had my first granite counters for 16 and then when we gutted our kitchen and redid everything, I put in new granite. The 16 year old granite was like new when we took it out. At the beginning I sealed them 1-2x a year, then 1x a year, then every other year. I knew someone who sold granite his entire life (owned the company) and had a gorgeous home and granite all over the house. His entrance into the living room dining room had granite floors. He told me there was no need to seal the granite at all. That being said, I still did and do it, but maybe every 2-3 years now. It is SO VERY EASY... there are different kits you can buy. I have a sealer that looks like water. Goes on quickly and I let it dry for only about 2 hours before I put anything on it. Never an issue.

I will say that I always use granite cleaner to clean my counter tops. Most people I know don't even do that.

No not overkill @ID2 I went to a granite query and picked out all our granite and spoke to the owners on how to care for it. You are not supposed to get the granite wet after you use the sealer on it. Directions say so on the product and I was told this by the owners. My granite looks brand new all these years later.
