I did recently purchase the foam/inner spring too from our local mattress store. I got the Simmons Black Hybrid Alcove. I've slept on it for 3 nights now, and while it seemed very comfortable in the store, I'm not sure now. I'm going to give it the 30 day trial they recommend, but if it's not better then, I'm going to take my time, as you did, and do my research. I did not do that last week and now wish I had.

Can anyone recommend a mattress that relieves pressure points on the hips? I have bursitis in both hips, but a cortizone shot in the right side has greatly helped the pain on that side, but still can be a bit tender. My budget is around $1500. Thanks!

What a coincidence to read your post since I too am in the market for a new mattress. I don't have the problem you are describing, but it's been years since I had to buy a new mattress, so I want to pick the right one. That in itself is a challenge. However, I have found some excellent websites that review different mattresses, their quality and different models. Check out sites like sleepopolis and sleeplikethedead. Consumer Reports has also reviewed most mattresses. I personally like the review for Saatva. The quality seems good and the price is fair. There is also an extensive return policy as with many mattresses that can be purchased online. Good luck with your search.

The best thing I have found is a 1" thick lambswool mattress pad. As my son said, "Mom, it's sweet." Overstock has them and you can return them if necessary. Good luck.

I have a furniture store and I think you should look for a gel memory foam mattress. If you can't afford T. brand, there are generic brands that are really good too. Pay attention to the warranty. The cheapos that don't last have a short warranty. The ones I sell cost $549 for a queen mattress only (no box spring or foundation) and $659 for a King size mattress only. The warranty is 10 years with the first 5 covered 100% and the last 5 is prorated out (kind of like tires). That is a 10" mattress. I also sell a 12" mattress for about $50 more each and the same warranty.

We have the 10" and love it.

Hope that helps!

I've talked about my recent mattress experience in a few threads already so I probably sound like a broken record to some people. But here it goes again...

About 4 yrs. ago or so, DH and I bought a name brand mattress (Stearns & Foster) and paid a pretty penny for it - over $2,000 on sale for a queen. We were immediately unhappy with it. We should have returned it, but we didn't. We ended up buying a thick topper from Costco and that helped. DH and I have been doing a bit more traveling over the past year and a half and always have a king size bed at the hotels. It's spoiled us. Earlier this year we decided we'd do a bedroom makeover and get a new king mattress. The project ensued around May/June and our bed was here the end of June. To back up a little, I had done a lot of research online before making my decision and we also went to an actual store to lay down on a few mattresses. We decided that we wanted a hybrid (combination of coils and memory foam). After all the research and checking reviews, we ended up ordering a Classic Brands Gramercy 14" Cool Gel Memory Foam & Innerspring Mattress from Wayfair. At the time, the cost for the king was just under $500. Yes, you read that right. And shipping was free. The mattress arrived compressed and rolled up. It was heavy and awkward to get it to our room - 2 people are needed. After opening it up, the mattress grew before our eyes. They want you to wait 24-48 hrs. for complete expansion before sleeping on it. We've been sleeping on it for close to 2 mos. now and I can honestly say it's one of the absolute best purchases we've ever made. It's supportive, but not hard. The top is soft enough to be comfortable, but your body doesn't sink way down in it. We never feel the other person move around. I actually look forward to getting into bed at night and don't want to get out in the morning. I have an odd sleep schedule, but it's better with this new mattress. When we're ready to redo other bedrooms, I already know we'll get this same mattress for the other beds. FYI - this is a mattress only. It can be used over a traditional box spring on a traditional frame, or by itself placed on a metal platform type foundation. We bought a heavy duty Smart Base and love the arrangement. With the base, there's all kinds of storage space underneath while the mattress sits at the perfect height.

If you have any questions, let me know.

We recently bought a new mattress and even though it was comfortable for a few nights my hip pressure points started aching. I bought a quilted mattress pad but took I t back to the store as it didn't help much. At Wal-Mart I found a Dream Serenity 2" foam Wave Mattress topper in the store. It was $89.00. We bought it and put it on the bed When I got in bed that night I was in heaven. It has been a week and I have no hip pain. I love it. That was the price of the queen size mattress topper. I have deep stretch marks from having three children years ago that makes it almost impossible to lay on my right side. Love this and highly recommend this to anyone with the same problem. Also the new mattress we bought made the top of my feet go to sleep when I laid on my stomach. This mattress topper did not. It may help someone with the mattress or new mattress they buy in the future rather than return it or suffer being uncomfortable. Here is a photo.

I have Fibro and am a side sleeper, and my hips and shoulders have been a sleep disrupter to me for several years.

Our last mattress was a 13" foam king sized from QVC and it was a terrific purchase. I used the Costco 3" topper and a Cuddle Ewe over that. The whole thing wound up being about 18" and difficult to get sheets and bedding for but I was still sleeping better than pre-fibro.

We recently needed to replace the queen mattress in our guest room and just by chance, I saw a compressed foam mattress in COSTCO and decided to go for it, since we were in a bit of a hurry.

We also bought the COSTCO topper. DH and I are both AMAZED how comfortable this mattress is. It is about the same level of comfort as our king, and also about the same price.

@MercysMom If you want to try a foam mattress, check the reviews. I would NEVER go back to a traditional mattress, and double never go back to anything with springs or hard "stuffing".

Memory Foam or Gel Memory Foam 3" mattress topper. 1"-2" will not be enough.

I have slept on memory foam for years even though it's a little on the warm side. I cannot sleep without it out.

Don't just buy any memory foam. Here is the info. I found online when I did research quite some time ago.

Toppers are given an ILD (Indentation Load Deflection) rating. These ratings range from 10 to 100. The higher the rating, the firmer the topper.

The density is perhaps the most important aspect of memory foam. The more density the mattress has, the better the quality. The density is also an indicator of comfort. Higher density memory foam reacts to body heat which allows it to mold itself to the shape of a warm body within a few minutes. Its heat-retaining properties are also helpful to some pain sufferers, who find the added warmth helps alleviate pain.

The density measures the weight per cubic foot. For example, a 3lb topper weighs 3lbs per cubic foot. (Caution: Some suppliers advertise the weight per 2 cubic ft). So make sure you ask so you are not misled. Toppers generally range in density from 2lb to 5lb, so a 3lb topper would be ideal – not too hard or too soft.

You can see unbiased reviews http://www.sleeplikethedead.com/mattress-topper-compare.html

If you don't want to click on the link just search sleep like the dead & click on memory foam topper reviews. They have a grading chart for 1,2,3 & 4" toppers with 3 lb, 4lb or 5lb density. The chart shows grades for sleeping on the topper like firmness, heat, light person, heavy person, how easy to move on it, for side, back, stomach sleepers, pain relief etc.

Has another chart that shows different brands, prices, how many inches & density of the toppers.

The site also has unbiased mattress reviews if you need a new mattress.

I just bought a king sized memory foam mattress about a month ago. I also got the adjustable base. Total price for all was $1400.00. I sleep so much better. My back, hips and shoulders no longer ache. I'm can even sleep on my side which before I could not do because it would hurt after about five minutes. There are tons online to choose from. Tuft and Needle, Helix and Casper are just a few. The adjustable base helps with the pressure points also by raising and lowering legs and neck area. It does not sleep hot as there is gel infused in it to keep you cool plus I bought a mattress pad that has cooling technology infused in it.

I second the recommendation for memory foam. I buy toppers from Overstock because it the only website I know that lists the density of the foam in their toppers. I find that a 4.0 density lasts longer and is more supportive than something you'd get at Walmart or Target. Put a good, thick mattress pad on whatever you buy and you won't have the "heat" problem some toppers and mattresses have.

My budget is around $1500. Thanks!

My ds just had to make a purchase for similar reason. As I've said before, my sil is in the mattress business (exec with large maker) and his advice to my ds was to get adjustable frame, you know, like hospital beds that rise at head and feet. He was happy to find out that his mattress worked with the frame so the purchase wasn't overly costly!

JeanLouise, I have to question how a mattress that is tightly rolled that includes both foam and inner springs will hold up over time. I mean the fact that it can be rolled, steel springs in particular is puzzling. I hope you have a great long experience with it regardess of my own questions.

Personally, I am sleeping on a Serta Dynanism Eurotop that I have had for 6 months now and it is perfect for me. Soft on top few inches, good support just underneath. I am able to sleep in all positions comfortably even on my stomach which is the trickiest position IMO.

I topped my 10 year old mattress with a 3" gel topper and a Cuddle Ewe underquilt. I don't need another mattress now. I have fibromyalgia, so pressure points are an issue. I wake with much less stiffness. You can also try sleeping on your back. This switch has helped with my pain. I still get onto my side during the night, but starting on my back really helps. I also switch to my back in the morning and stretch. On another thread someone suggested the Classic Brands 14 Inch Gramercy Hybrid Cool Gel Memory Foam and Innerspring Mattress, Queen on Wayfair for the best price. This one has great reviews and a decent price. Wayfair is supposed to have a great return policy too!

I hate looking for information on something I want to buy if the site is selling it. Sounds like the OP already bought a mattress & trying to decide if she should return it or not. It's pretty bad when you buy a new mattress & have to buy something else to add to it to make it comfy.
