A couple of years back I just 'had' to have the "latest and greatest" so my wonderful hubby told me to just pick out the washer I wanted and of course it was a front loader. BIG MISTAKE!!! I soon learned that you can't open it to add what you might have forgotten and you cannot soak clothes in it....I sometimes soak clothes if they are especially dirty or stinky or to help with stain removal. Then we had a couple of bad storms and our electricity kept going out....it fried the washers computer....it was going to cost more to repair than to purchase a new one so I went and picked out an 'old fashioned' top loader, nothing fancy and I am very happy with that choice. Good luck on your search!

My neighbor has a Kenmore washer and dryer and the washer was leaking and not draining and the dryer wouldn't dry. It's only a few years old and trying to get a service technician out that was difficult. I was to let him in and service was scheduled from 8 to noon. I called about 9 and they didn't have the scheduling done. Then another call and said they would be out first thing in the morning. Next morning I called and said they're on there way in 20 min. Then I called back and got another dispatcher (who was in Calif. and we live in Nevada) and said that wasn't true. Then another call and instead of calling the contact number (myself) they called her husband who was in rehab and he said to cancel because his wife was at work. I blame that on my neighbor for not telling them I was going to be there. I've only heard bad things about the new Kenmore's.

I have a Frigidaire Affinity set. I have had this set for abot 6 years and love.Just remember, you can't open the door and throw a forgotten item in once the washer

has started. If you get any brand of front loading, make sure to wipe the rubber

seal when you finish doing the laundry. Leave the door open for a while. Good

luck in your search.

I purchased a Samsung front loader washer and gas dryer about 4 years ago. I like it. I got the storage drawers for underneath mainly for the ease of not bending over so far to get the clothing from the machines. Remember to check this when you are looking at them in the stores. The model I have has a "pure" cycle which I LOVE! It will let you know when it needs to run thru a cleaning cycle. It's great. My friend had purchased a set 6 months prior to me and opted for the model that had a steam cycle. She likes her's as well but would have preferred the "pure" cycle.

Here are the main reasons why I converted to the front loading models:

I have king size bedding which I wash oftern. (sheets weekly and blankets & comforters monthtly)

I have a ton of throw covers in a variety of weights because we have dogs. I wanted to be able to reduce the number of loads for these items.

I only found a few models that were not front loaders that could handle king size bedding.

My advise is to make a list of the features that you need (delicates, perm.press, etc) and features that you would like to have (if possible) Check the warranties on the machines. Check the reviews. Keep your budge in mind.

I had a Maytag front loader years ago and got rid of it. Hated that thing! Replaced it with a top loader. If I ever need a new one, I'm entertaining the thought of getting one of those top loaders with built in sink like the Samsung activewash. It got a good review at Consumer Reports, but I'm still hesitant to return to an HE machine given my experience with that Maytag. Guessing that HE machines will be the only option then, though.

Thanks for your answers. Kenmore isn't a choice anymore. My daughter has a Frigidaire for a few years and likes it so I'm influenced by that.

I've seen top loaders with no agitators. I think I need a front loader because I'm short and getting shorter. The Kenmore is still going strong, but it's really difficult to get into. But I'm so used to it. It's just me & DH, no huge loads. At 79 I don't want something that's smarter than me.

I just replaced the Kenmore gas dryer, also 28 years old, with a "simple" Whirlpool because of the front drop down or "shelf" door that the Kenmore had and I like. That was easier than the washer. I never thought the dryer would go first.

I will get a pedestal probably. I use a local store that's very close and convenient. They say the top load commercial type Speed Queen is very popular with larger families. I don't need that.

Based on my expereince, I would say do NOT buy any LG appliances! They have very limited & very poor service. I live in a major metropolitan area and there are only 2 businesses that service LG washers & dryers. The both knew I was at their mercy and they enjoyed their power. It took 4 weeks to get someone to show up and then they had to order the parts and then we had to rebook the actual repair visit – it took 6 weeks… RIDICULOUS!!!!! I could not use the machine during all that time – had to schlep out to the laundromat (which is icky, a hassle and expensive). Save yourself a lot of grief and eliminate LG from your list right from the start. Whichever brand you get, you are smart to go with few whistles & bells – less to break down. Once you pick one, before you buy check to see what king of service is actually available in your area – get feed back on the repair business = then make your final decision on the brand. Also, you need to keep the door of the washer open when not in use now-a-days or it can grow mold around the seal of the door. It helps the mold issue some not to use any fabric softener – use white vinegar instead. You can get it by the gallon cheap at Costco. Vinegar will soften your clothes, clean the machine and nothing smells like vinegar when the wash is done.

Very pleased with my Maytag front loader. I have had it for nearly ten years. Never a problem, never a musty smell- I just always leave the door open a bit when not on use and occasionally clean behind and around the gasket. Love how it cleans my laundry. It gets moderate use, no daily loads..

i had a repair man from a and e repair service that does a very good job. he told me that sears changed there repair service name from sears repair to a and e to hide there crappy service from people that didnt want to use sears service any more. so with the new name people wouldnt realize that it was still sears service. and as long as your washer and drying is still working you should consider keeping it because i read tons of reveiws that say they regret replacing the still running appliances because new stuff doesnt last like older stuff. hopr this helps you out and good luck.

I have a front loader after my old Kenmore bit the big one. DH decided we needed the front loader. Can I tell you how much I dislike it? My laundry room is small, like a big closet and getting the clothes out of that thing to put in the dryer is a work out. Plus you don't have the option of soaking clothes. I hope this one dies a quick death so I can go back to a top loader.

Maytag front loader. Love it. Home Depot. Great service. WILL NOT BUY FROM SEARS. Customer service outsourced and you don't want to hear my stories. Not enough space here anyway.
