Heya FG! Just finished all the birdie breakfasts. Happy little, and not so little, birdies makes for a happy chickie!

Yeah, I think the confusion for some might be that tighter threadcounts means unbreathable fabric. It's not that you want airholes in the fabric. But for those of us who tend to generate a lot of heat, we know that cotton (and the better quality and weave the better!) is more breathable than some others.

I could never do a 'blend' or flannel or anything like that. Doesn't matter how thin the fabric is - those don't breathe. But at least there are choices and choices are always good.

Used to be that ONLY the warp (lenghwise) threads were counted. I believe nowadays they also count the woof (horizontal) threads to make it "seem" like more.

Anyway........the higher the count, the smoother (and heavier) the fabric.

If you choose Egyptian cotton (which is the softest & strongest), you can save money by going with a lower thread count (even 300 or 400).

I like around a 400 TC. I don't like the thicker feeling sheets. I like light & airy. I also like 100% Egyptian Cotton or SuPima Cotton. I don't want cotton/poly blend or microfiber sheets. I hate sheets the pill.

Sheets are one thing I normally spend a good amount of money on because being comfortable and cozy in bed while I sleep is really important to me.

A couple of years ago we bought a beach house and had to buy sheets for all the beds there. I didn't want to spend the money I spent on my sheets, but I still wanted decent sheets. I ended up buying some at Target. They were Egyptian cotton sheets by a brand called Fieldcrest. I can't remember the thread count but they were around $70 I think for full size. I have to say, they are some of the best sheets I have ever gotten. I really didn't expect that. I have even had guests comment on how much they loved them and wanted to know where I got them. They are so nice and heavy and very soft. I was really impressed with them.

A good night's sleep is important to me, and I personally prefer 800+. My DH could sleep on any thread count. They have samples at the stores that you could feel for yourself to see what works for you. In addition to the mall and bedding stores, Walmart and Target have swatches hanging up in the sheet aisles and pretty good sheet sets at reasonable prices.

For years, I bought 1200 thread count Egyptian cotton sheets online, and I love them. They are a strong, soft, heavy sheet. If you look in the right place, you can find them for around $60-$70. However, a couple years ago, I switched to modal sheets, and I would never go back. They make a lot of different types of modal sheets, but this specific brand, sold at BBB, is "Pure Beech" and the style is the Jersey Knit. I just checked and they are actually on sale. I'm going to pick up another set. They usually have samples of the fabric hanging in the aisle next to them, so you can feel how wonderful they are.

I think we all know what 'thread count' means. But the point of having more threads per inch, with cotton, is that you still have great breathability along with even more durability..

I tend to run hot - VERY hot. That is why everything on my bed is cotton. The mid-range thread count sheets I mostly use (800tc is my fav) continue to be breathable BECAUSE they are cotton. I'm not trying to impress anybody. The breathability of cotton is just inherent in the fabric and more of a tc gives a nicer feel to the skin.

If you went with polyester in a dense thread count, this would continue to not be breathable because polyester isn't the same as cotton in that regard.

All that said, however, there is something for everybody so that is the good thing!
