Turn a Vase into a Lamp

Some of you have seen my vase that I found at our local produce stand for $11. It had cats, so I bought it, not knowing what I would do with it. Utensil holder? It was very thick (and heavy) clay with a hole in the bottom. After a day of seeing it on my kitchen counter, I decided that it would work well as a lamp.

I didn't take any "before" pictures, but I do have the "after." (The shade is not really crooked).

I bought a wood disc at a craft store, with the hole punched already, for the top of the vase. I thought that I might paint it, but I think I like it au natural.

For the bottom, I attached a lid from a jar (to keep it steady), and I drilled holes in three Goodwill pieces- a silver plate, an ugly wooden disc with an owl, and an Indian inspired brown plate. I turned the owl disc upside down so that none of the carving shows. The discs were $3 a piece. The three discs are screwed together, and the vase is glued in to the bottom.

I bought a simple lamp kit at Home Depot, along with a petite shade. Overall, I am pleased with my new lamp.

I'll post more ideas in case someone else wants inspiration to transform something into a lamp, or perhaps begin the thrift hunt.

A friend of mine loved my glass filled with seashells lamp and kept looking for one at Goodwill to no avail. I bought a glass vase at the dollar store and a lamp kit and my DH turned the vase into a lamp then I filled it with shells - put a few special pretty ones from the shell shop arond the outside ad she was thrilled.I would guess it cost less than $10 to make.

You can buy everything except the vase and the shade in a kit at the hardware store and you can get shades at Goodwill for a quarter.

Nice lamp! Thanks for posting the instructions, along with the pictures. I need one lamp for my den. This might solve my problem.

You're cat lamp is absolutely ADORABLE! I love it! I also love the book lamp with the industrial metal... just really appeals to me.

My Dad would re-wire lamps and make lamps that my Mom would want. I have a wonderful memories of "helping" my Dad do this.... thanks for sharing!
