We have just purchased a new home where all the closets have California Closets systems. While they are attractive, I don't think they are configured to meet our needs.

If you have a California Closet have you ever had it modified? Was it cost-effective? I have contacted the company and they told me the original cost of each closet but I have yet to speak to the designer to determine the cost of modification.

Without doing a lot of leg work, I am wondering if if would be best to modify what is there or start at square one with a new but less expensive Elfa system.

Thank you for your thoughts.

I have California Closet systems in my home, and I have

"modified" them a number of times. That is one of the

benefits of this brand, in that shelves can be moved,

baskets can be re-purposed, hanging poles can be

purchsed, drawers can be added or removed . . .the choices

seem to be endless as your needs do change from time to time.

Have a representative come to your home, and explain your

needs to them. See what they suggest to make the closets work for

you now, in this new home, instead of the previous owner.

Good luck!

These are really expensive closets. Don't rip them out and put Elfa in - that's like a mortal sin. Please call the local store and have a rep come and look and reconfigure what's there. Really - just don't do the Elfa thing.

I strongly disagree about Elfa being junk. I've had mine in my small-ish closets for many years now. Was able to install them myself (after the design was planned out at my local Container Store. I only had to install the top channel. I have all the versatility I could ever dream of, and can add elements any time i want. I don't have large room-sized closets that would accommodate something like CA closets. I'm extremely pleased with my Elfa system. I have them in every closet. Not "junk" to me!

I have CA Closets in my master BR walk in closet. They were very expensive, but IMO, they are not all that great.. We have our system in white. It is just lanimate over cheap partial board.

Over the years, we have had to replace the plastic tubes that are covering the rods. Two shelves broke on the bottom and had to be replaced. The whole unit had to be taken down and apart to change the shelves as they were holding the unit together with screws placed under the shelf in little holes that were only six inches from the floor. They are showing their age for sure.

One good thing about them is that they can be reconfigured to suit your changing needs.

They are quite an investment, so it is worth it to keep updating them and changing them to accommodate your things.

I would never invest in putting them in another closet. My DH and I have put together closet systems from IKEA and from Lowes. They are no better or worse than CA, just less expensive.

Just design your own closet, go to the big box stores and build your own! California Closets are insanely expensive! We did our own closets in our old house and now my new home. They are efficient and use every inch of space for optimal use.

A big thank you to everyone who offered their opinions--both good and bad. I did schedule an appointment with the original designer to come to our current home to see how we now utilize closets. Then she can make her recommendations for modification at the new home.

@lolakimono This has been a long and arduous process. After living in an old house for years, I decided I would like to move to a shiny, new, updated condo or loft. I found a condo owned by a local celeb that I fell in love with, but sadly it wasn't for sale. Within the same building a condo just came on the market, we jumped on it, put our house on the market and it sold in 5 days. Now I have to get rid of half our furniture and lots of household stuff--a cathartic exercise!

I wanted to circle back to report on our meeting with the designer of the current configuration of our soon to be California Closets. Since we are downsizing, my biggest fear was we would not have enough closet space. She, however, assured us by measuring our current closets right down to counting garments that we will in fact be fine.

We did make a few changes. The current master closet has two built in hampers. We opted to have one removed and replaced with drawers. In the entry closet there is one file cabinet and we are having another installed (admittedly, I am a paper monger).

While we aren't in our new home yet, I want to report that I am so far impressed with my experience working with the designer. Keeping my fingers crossed that all goes well.

You are going to love the Cal Closets! They are much better quality than others we looked at on the market at that time. We had every closet in the house done (all at the same time, mind you). When they needed to be tweaked, I called the Rep - easy peasy.

Our house has very high ceilings and DH & I each have our own walk in closet. My DH put another set of shelves in each closet in the house above the one the builder installed so we have extra storage there, but I have shelves in my closet holding linens and my very large standing jewelry box in mine so it is fairly crowded anyway. I am jealous of those California closets.

Nice closets are a huge selling feature.

They're well worth the money to invest in.
