Avoid a agitatorless top loading washer - I have friends that have them and they hate them.

My best advice is to choose as basic as you can find. That's not to suggest a wringer machine , but you definitely do want an agitator. I'd avoid a front loader, or one of those high-spin models that claim they cut drying time. From what I've read they set in wrinkles badly.

No matter what you choose, good luck getting away from water conservation standards. I've learned to set my machine much higher for load level than it actually is. Otherwise, there's barely enough water to get the full load wet.

Rather surprisingly to us, we love ours. Clothes get clean, washing/drying time is very short and I haven't noticed an increase in wrinkles as long as you take the clothes out promptly.

Love my Speed Queen washer and dryer. It is just like the Speed Queen commercial washer and dryer, but without the coin box. Both units have stainless steel drums. The gears are steel. It had a five year warranty. I can wash a king sized quilt in it. They are so heavy duty that my son the fire chief purchased a set for the fire department to wash their heavy fire suits. There are no whistles and bells--the set just washes clothes!!!

I have heard about people with the new high efficiency models having trouble with mold around the gasket on the door of the washer. I just wanted a good solid washer and dryer that I could depend on. I have had them for 8 years and never had any trouble. They get used a lot because we have 3 grandchildren living with us. Hope you find the set that best fits your needs.

I have Whirlpool Duet frontloader and dryer that are stackable but I do not have them stacked. I purchased them at Costco and have not had any problems in the 7 years I have had them.

I can't imagine why a machine without an agitator would be a problem either. I got an HE agitatorless washer when they first came out. I have had it for 12-1/2 years without one minute's problem -- including never having a problem with mold that another poster mentioned. I would NEVER go back to a washer with an agitator. Washing comforters is a breeze without one.

From some of the discussions about this topic in the past, it is clear that everyone has different opinions about what works for them.

So ask yourself a lot of questions.

Do I need all the fancy bells and whistles in a machine, or is basic enough for my needs? With all the extras comes bigger cost, more likely to break and more costly to repair.

Do I have a lot of really dirty laundry and need a washer that fills fully with a good strong agitator, or will a HE washer with less water work for the level of laundry I do? Realize that many people are getting the HE washers for water conservation, but then finding they have to wash clothing twice to get it clean or put fewer clothes per load. They have saved nothing.

Am I willing to put up with the possibilities of smell and mold issues that many have with the HE front loaders?

I'll repeat what some other posters have. Speed Queen has really high ratings on their full fill washers. My personal preference is full fill, full agitator washers for our level of dirty laundry. Mine can be opened mid cycle, has hot water wash choice and can be rigged for a hot rinse if I want it.

Love Sears Kenmore and have for 30+ years...owned two and had one minor repair that was fixed by husband. Recommend a top loader, w/agitator, and super size capacity...stay away from touch button selection and go for tried and true manual selection, aka knobs!

I want all the bells and whistles and use all the different settings: delicates, casual wrinkle free; sheets and towels, etc. all the time. My next set will have the steam settings.

I would check Consumer Reports online for washers rating. You may want to buy a washer with a porcelain vs a Painted steel finish. If you are buying a front loader, you may want to buy a pedestal base.

Most stores do a price match. Please bring a printed copy of the item with price when shopping.

Speed Queen is about as old school you can get, and in washers this is good news! When the time comes to replace mine I plan to go the Speed Queen route.

Simple is better, IMO. I don't need the bells and whistles.

I could not find a speed queen when I was looking . I was certain of one thing - I wanted a basic machine without electronics and that was what I bought - a Hotpoint. It is all good except the low water levels and I don't think you can avoid them. I really loved my old washer and don't like the new one nearly as much but that is life, I will get over it.

It seems all appliances have gotten so expensive and yet are poorer and poorer in quality. I bought the most basic machine they had and paid $500, but they had machines at Lowes for over $2000.

I had Sears Kenmore for years.....but switched to another branch 3 years ago......should have gone the Sears Route again..............seemed like a much stronger and reliable brand.......bought a Maytag Bravos.. x large capacity (which i had with Sears and it handled everything)...........this Maytag when i wash a double (not

a heavyweight spread) bedspread it goes to UL (unbalanced load)...and i always have to reset it....it jerks around although it is balanced......next time back to Sears

and i had to get used to the noises the newer Maytag made..............................

Absolutely takes ALL KINDS of consumers to do the laundry!

I have a new-ish one, and it's by far the best, and EASIEST washing machine we've ever owned.

Ours is a Kenmore HIGH EFFICIENCY TOP LOADER.

I had some reservations when we needed to purchase it, and DH talked me into giving it a try, and am I glad I did!

I like every single thing about it.

Although it is TRUE that nothing is quite as reliable as what we loved years ago, (planned obsolescence), I feel as confident with Sears appliances as I do with anything available elsewhere, and service is STILL easier to arrange than purchases from stores without an appliance selling history, at least where I live.

Buying a good appliance is always a guessing game for us because we always try to wring every drop of juice from what we own before replacng it.
