LOL!!! Who cares. I sure don't. I knew some of it. Once when visiting my sister I set the table & she told me where everything was suppose to go. I thought who cares this is not a formal dinner of any kind just family. I would never go up to someone in my house setting the table & tell them it's all wrong.

I hardly ever set the table. When I do I place a napkin to the right of the plate with a fork, knife & spoon on it. That's it. Works for us.

We are NOT formal here, but I have always set my table "corrctly". I never knew where all of those other things belonged, because I have never used them, but it is good to know. Just in case. And, notice the knife is facing the correct way, also. LOL I have always place my napkin under my fork. Is that the correct thing to do? Or do you lay it to the side?

I can can not imagine being that formal for any dinner at my house. Just not me, for any occasion.

This. I don't even own most of those things. I don't own special forks for dessert. I don't even own wine glasses because I don't drink wine and don't entertain. I don't own teacups and saucers, I own big coffee mugs that don't come with saucers.

I have a small kitchen with a small table...if I put all those items out there would be only room for one person to sit and eat...

I knew most of it, but like others here, I've never set a table this formally. We don't entertain at that level.

What threw me for a loop not long ago, was my mom was here for a holiday dinner, and she was setting the table (something I usually do the night before, because I love a pretty 'formal' set table and enjoy looking at it for awhile before it is 'wrecked' with a meal Ha!). I about freaked out, as she was putting the fork on the wrong side, and just really doing everything backwards. She is the one that taught me how to set a table, so I was a little confused to say the least.

I don't know if it is because she never sets a table anymore, living alone, and has just forgotten, or what. I didn't say anything, but moved things around when she wasn't looking.

I always thought this is something people should know, even if they don't use it in their own homes, because you can be out somewhere, and a little embarrassed if you don't know which piece is for what.

Yikes! My Tablemate doesn't have that much room, & I have the XL size. Guess I'll have to downsize my pizzas from large to medium & get a 12 oz Pepsi instead of the 1 liter to make room.

Yes, I actually set many tables exactly like this when I was much younger and worked at a CC. There are meals that require more glassware, utensils and plates than what is pictured! Imagine that.

Have any of you watched the movie Pretty Woman and do you recall the scenes of the hotel manager working with Julia Roberts on how to correctly use each piece of the table setting? Than she goes out for dinner and there are utensils she was not familiar with.

Guests would be confused when sitting down for a formal dinner at the CC.

We have friends who set their tables for holidays as pictured above. They have different dinnerware for different holidays.

The beauty of the formal dining settings is that you need so much space for the settings, that you actually have elbow room.

I would get confused in a restaurant by the two forks. Now I know the short fork is for salads and the longer fork is for dinner.

Yes, I know how to set a table, and, yes, I care. While, of course, not as formally as shown in the photo, we lay a table correctly at each meal, i.e., we regularly use bread plates, folded napkins, salad and dinner forks, wine glasses, etc.

I did know with the tutelage of a how to set a table and fold dinner napkins book years ago. But...Hell no! Was never that formal...and all the unnecessary dishes, glasses and silverware to wash and put away!

Being the resident Tableware Ho, yes, I do set a formal table for the holidays 😆

I took DS to a white tablecloth restaurant beginning in middle school to teach him how to order, pay, who sits where, etc.

It's paid off. As a young man out on his own dining with high dollar clients, he's not a klutz.

I wish more parents realized the importance of this sort of social skill.
