Oil paintings: Reproductions

I was watching Amazing Race and they showed a place in China that empolys 1000's of people who reproduce famous oil paintings.

Does anyone know of a site that sells these? They were beautiful.

May I make a plea for buying original oils by local artists? Most places have sidewalk art shows. Go, look at a lot. Talk to the artists. Prices are reasonable and you will end up with something that you really love. Some artists will even take comissions and paint a picture to suit your colors, or size. People will notice, perhaps more than they would a repro.

if you have your heart set on a classic reproduction, see if you can find a museum print to frame. This way the museum that owns the painting can make a little money to keep caring for it.

Prior to retiring i owned a picture frame shop for 42 years. Each year i would attend a convention in NYC where distributors would show their products.

One of my favorite things was to visit the Asian vendors and look through the oil paintings for sale. The paintings were stacked on tables by size & price. I would pull up a chair and begin flipping through the piles.

Often there would be several of the same images by different artists, or perhaps painted by the same person on bad day!

These paintings were priced beginning at about $7 and rarely exceeded $100. I usually purchased what I thought my clients would like in their homes, and mostly, what I liked!!

I never bought copies of famous works because it is obvious they are not the "real thing". My decorators preferred smaller works that were well done, but unknown. For myself, I found a beautiful impressionistic painting that still hangs as a focal point in my living room. I did have to paint over the signature however... "Garcon" was a dead giveaway!!

I never intended to pass off a reproduction as an authentic work of art.

I agree that local art is wonderful. It still sells for $100's --unframed.

Using your preferred search engine by typing in reproductions of famous oil paintings should render plenty of results. I actually bought some reproductions through QVC.com about 15 years ago. Please note: QVC no longer has this art site as a sibsidiary business. The paintings in the size I wanted, with my choice of frame, cost about $200 each. The paintings are still hanging in my home, so as the old saying goes... it was money well spent.

Like most inexpensive merchandise from China, these paintings are junk and are easily recognizable by anyone who knows anything about art as such. If I saw this stuff hanging in someone's home, my opinion of their taste would instantly drop. I'd rather see a nicely framed poster, in which case I'd know the person had good taste but not a lot of money.

The look of an oil painting is a very different design statement than a framed poster.

If you wish to have a repro of Van Gogh's Sunflowers, I'd recommend the framed poster or a giclee. No one is going to believe you have the "real thing" anyway.

Many Asian "art-by- the-yard" paintings are actually quite beautifully done.

At any rate, most beat the heck out of the Kinkade's QVC used to hawk!

When I visited Vietnam I went into a building where there where hundreds of people painting in oils and other mediums. These people were all challenged in some physical way.

i was told that their afflictions were the product of agent orange. There is no government aid for these people. They were all sent to a school where they were taught to paint, make frames, etc to sell. The money made from the sale supports all of these people.

Some of these people were so deformed that my heart broke to see them. I felt guilty that my government used harmful chemicals that hurt the people of Vietnam and America alike.

I purchased a beautiful painting. It make me fell better to know that I supported a good cause and helped a beautiful soul get the care and support they needed.

i have looked online to see I could purchase another painting or two, but have not been successful in finding any.

When I visited China, I noticed that the Chinese people are very talented and their items are beautiful and well made. Their art work is breathtaking. I wish we would import the good stuff they make instead of all of their junk.

If you know the name of the piece or the original artist, you can find many on Wayfair. They're available in several different sizes too.

In my last job in a state office, we got new interior paint and carpet but a "0" budget for decorating one large room with a big blank wall. We went to Walmart and bought a big "original" oil painting of some mountains. I and a couple co-workers got out our own oil paints and "enhanced" this painting to the point where it actually looked good, or at least not so much like a Chinese original.

I used to work at a art company that did home art parties like tupperware does. I was in the home office/warehouse.

We used to get thousands of paintings. From what I was told, the paintings were done like an assembly line. Each person painted their "speciality" on the paintings.
