Baby Bunnies!!

I decided to work on all of my small painting projects today so I was sitting outside of my screened in patio chalk painting.

My big dog and my small dog were outside with me. I saw my big dog rooting around in one part of the yard that made me suspicious.

I think bunnies like to make nests in that area because it has leaves that fall from the tree. The next thing I see is my dog carrying something in her mouth!

I wasn't sure what it was, but she actually dropped it. The little dog was standing by, not sure what to do.

Well, one of the babies was left and my small dog chased it out of the nest. I picked up the baby and tried to put it back in, but it did not want to go.

The baby wanted to stay in my hand! I got the dogs put away and held the tiny bunny for a long time. I decided to foster it for a few days until it can make it out in the great outdoors.

The poor thing literally jumped into my hand! I am such

a sucker! I went to PetsMart and bought some alfalfa and rabbit food.

My little dog still wants to put the poor thing in her mouth, but that is not going to happen! A bunny for Easter!

It is soooo sweet and loves to sit very still in my hand. The dogs scared it and it made a terrible scared squeak hat I never wish to hear again!

I let the dogs out very early (4 am) last week and turned on the outdoor lights. I saw two adult rabbits sitting very still right in the middle of the yard. I could not let the dogs out right then so I had to make a noise

to run them off.

A few days later I found bunny babies! Must have been mom and dad.

The rabbits aren't good news for your gardens. But, fortunately, you have dogs. They'll probably chase the rabbits off eventually.

Have fun taking care of the bunny. We have a rabbit that hangs around our yard sometimes. I know she's a female. She was a little large not so long ago. LOL!!! I saw her the other day & she's not so large now. She had her babies some place. Last year DH found them in one of his garden beds.

That's a very sweet Easter story! Is the bunny old enough to eat the food that you bought? Aren't they like kittens, nursing for weeks, then eating food?

Let us know how it's going.

PS Be careful to wash your hands after handling the babe (or any animal for that matter). After all, it is a wild animal.

I did some research before I bought the food. It said they eat the same food domestic rabbits eat. Based on the size and the fact that the eyes are open, it looks like I am on the right track.

I watched him/her to see if she was eating the food. She is eating the alfalfa up nicely! I have put a fair amount in there since last night and it is getting gobbled up.

I am not sure about the rabbit pellets. I watched her drink the water so she will not be dehydrated.

So far, so good! When I put my hand into the aquarium to change the food, she comes right over to my hand! Sooooo cute! It will be hard to release her back to nature, but I will enjoy it for the time being!

That's right. Wildlife experts say you should leave baby animals alone. Don't pick them up or move them. Mama will be back for them.

i found 4 baby bunnies today in a ground nest and the top was covered in rabbit fur. I lifted it up and looked at the babies and just left them there. When we had dogs, they were forever bringing baby bunnies up to the back door.

I'm very happy to have seen no rabbits so far this Spring. The last two Summers one or two were very destructive in my gardens, it was discouraging. Maybe the neighbors' dogs scared them off.

Awww, Baby Bunnie must be the cutest thing EVER! I'm no expert in rabbits but I think the hay is a great idea to keep feeding. I think I'd use the pellets sparingly only because you say you will release bunny back to nature. Where will bunny find pellets in the field? Hay, grass, organic green tops of spring ripening veggies. Things Mama would be teaching it to forage on. Dandelions if the yard is NOT pesticide/ herbicide treated. You must be doing something right as bunny seems happy. Thank you for giving the little thing TLC.
