Dumb question.....but how am I supposed to removed the cardboard protective packaging from around the candle in the 12 inch lantern? Am I supposed to unscrew the bottom of the unit? I couldn't find anything in the meager instructions. Thanks!

I used my Kuhn Rikon shears very carefully. Therer is some kind of tape about half way up on that heavy cardboard protector but you have to be mindful of the flame feature. They definately need to rethink this packaging method.

Thanks, Fressa, I agree with re-thinking the packaging! I've even e-mailed them. I ended up doing something similar to what you mentioned, very carefully cutting off bits and pieces. Success with the first one. One more to go. I would have thought that if you were supposed to unscrew the bottom to remove the packaging that they would have that in the instructions. Thanks for responding. At least I don't feel alone!

And as if that wasn't enough "stress" for me, opening 2 of the 12 inch lanterns, I then proceeded to unpack the mosaic cylinder that I saw on a recent Valerie show. The dense styrofoam was packed to tightly inside the cylinder that I had to also take that out "bit by bit". You can only guess the mess that styrofoam makes! I had it all over me and my kitchen. I'm sure there are more "particles" of it floating around here that I have caught yet!

I can understand the need to properly protect these items for shipping, but they really do need to provide some instructions as to how best (and easiest) to unpack without potentially damaging the item!

With my 12" lantern that arrived today, that annoying cardboard sleeve would not budge, because it was getting caught on the metal tabs that hold the glass panels in place.

Finally, after making one clean cut to the cardboard at the front, I was able to shove the cardboard toward the back of the lantern on each side of the candle, very carefully, because I didn't want to hurt the flame tip or dislodge the candle from where it is screwed into the lantern. Pushing the cardboard toward the back changed its rigid shape enough that it could then be lifted up past the metal tabs that it had been catching on.

There has to be a better way to package this.
