Dressers and Night Stands

How do you feel about bedroom furniture having to match? I have always had a tendency for matchy- matchy and now I'm feeling that that may be boring. I look at magazines and notice that the night stands are often different on each side of the bed and the dressers are sometimes different. I am looking into new furniture for our master and think I may want to go for the eclectic look.

My preference is matchy matchy. That said, my bedroom isn't. If I could go out tomorrow and buy new matchy furniture, I would. I say do what makes you happy.

I like eclectic. I had matchy-matchy for a long time and got really restless. Over the years, really only one piece had my heart. I kept that piece and my dil asked if she could have the other pieces. Then I purchased items over time that spoke to me. So, now I have my beautiful natural oak high-low dresser, an iron bed and two different nightstands. My room now makes me smile.

They don't HAVE to match... Your bedroom, your furniture. I have matching dresser, chest of drawers and armoire but the bed is pewter wrought iron and bedside tables are primitive Mexican, both different. I don't like matchy match anything.

When I first earned my degree, I had a hodge-podge of hand- me- down furniture. But eventually, I decided to buy my furniture piece by piece according to what I loved. I also focused on finding quality pieces. Interestingly, my pieces now go together without matching. I love the feel of my rooms. Hodge- podge evolved into a more quality ecletic style that reflects who I am.

I had a hodge podge too in the master for years. I used my night tables and some were really rickety.

One of my bucket list items was a custom built Amish, matchy, matchy bedroom suite which I finally scraped up the $ for. When they delivered it I sat down on the bed and cried it was so beautiful.

One thing the women here have taught me is live like you mean it and buy only what you love.

My perfectly matched beautiful dark oak, real wood, bedroom set is 42 yrs old (not 37) and still looks perfect. I couldn't afford to buy it today. If I were to buy a new bedroom set, I'd choose not to match everything to make it more interesting.

I've always used the nightstands as living room end tables. The drawers come in handy. The bedroom gets randon "things" that I find interesting............

@Desertdi I have two chests in my living room at each end of the sofa, I use for end tables. One is solid mahogany that my dad made when he was teaching industrial arts, to be used as a record cabinet (late 1940's). I think bedside tables are a great solution because of the drawers.

My husband's 2nd career was a carpenter. He made our night stands. He did great work.

@Kachina624 OHMIGOSH! I have my dad's homemade (same era as yours) SOLID wood tool chest (painted Chinese red) stashed in the garage. I think I might use it as a window seat when I finally get my spare bedroom "done"............. It's large enough to hold tons of linens/blankets.........di

I have a very big walk-in closet, so no dressers in the bedroom. I do have furniture in the bedroom. Antique cedar chest, desk and armoire.

For nightstands I have round glass & metal Ikea end tables.

Years ago, LOL, I had those round tables with floor length table cloths and glass tops. So I wanted something more open looking.

My nightstands have to match. I want to like that look, but I can't do it. LOL

My bed is upholstered, so it doesn't match the rest of the furniture.

I don't like matchy matchy furniture in any part of the house. Having different pieces is so much more interesting IMO. My mother didn't do matchy matchy, and she had wonderful taste. Now I look through magazines, watch HGTV and look at Pinterest for ideas.

Most of our master BR furniture does match but I'd rather it be more interesting with different pieces. I'm really not a matchy matchy person but must have been years ago when we bought the furniture.

I have both, a matched set in the master and electic in the guest room. I think both are very pretty.

I live in a new house and we just furnished it within the past 1 1/2 years. I was determined not to have any of my furniture in this house match. I wanted the cottage feel since we live on a lake and I feel we have succeeded with our look.

My dresser, armoire, and one night stand are in the same simple light oak. I didn't buy them because they matched, but because I liked them and they were in my price range at the time. I am still very happy with them.

My second night stand is one of those pressed wood round tables with a cloth over it. I change the cloth once in a while to get a different look.

I just bought two very different pieces for storage in the bedroom. One is painted blue-green. It has tallish legs to give an open feel, and the other has a wood frame with seagrass drawers. Everything complements everything else.

I am also a fan of buying what you like since you do tend to end up with items that you not only love, but that look good together.

I am ok with it not being matchy matchy, but it needs to be something that makes sense not just a mixing of traditional pieces. I like to see traditional along with a repurposed antique or flea market piece. I used the same chest of drawers for years and they didn't match anything else that I had but they always looked nice and like they fit in. They were very basic came as a kit and my father put them together when I was a little girl. We got them when I got married. I changed them every so many years when I got tired of them. They were painted, antiqued, different colors on the drawer fronts, fabric on the drawer fronts, pretty crystal drawer pulls, wooden drawer pulls, etc. I had them for about 50 years when they finally gave out.
