Accent Tile or No???

We are getting our bathroom remodeled to become handicapped accessible which the VA is paying for much of it but I wanted to add a little extra money to it to make it a beautiful handicapped bathroom. Question is... I found a beautiful accent tile for the shower in rich copper tones, browns and gold and was wondering is it a bad idea to use accent tiles? I'm using oil rubbed bronze finishes and I think it would pop the tile and fishishes but maybe that's just me.

That sounds beautiful.

We use the bathroom many times a day...why not make it as nice as possible?

If you DON'T do it now...you'll be kicking yourself for years to come...tiling isn't something that gets done every few years!

Thank you! The 12x12 tile will be a medium tone brown but the accent is like jewels. I read that people that do the accent tile wish they hadn't a few years later. I guess I'm just nervouse about it all. The contractors start Dec 7th and I have to get all my decisions made before then....biting my nails

I think accent tile is well worth the expense. It can absolutely define the tilework and make the entire wall look beautiful and custom (even though it isn't). Go for it! I bet it will look marvelous.....

Thank you Q4U! I have bought several different pieces to try with the tile and they always say to go with your gut and what speaks to you and this one has screamed at me. The same tile will be used on the walls of the shower along with the floor so I was thinking the accent tile would break it up and it looks timeless with the colors and any colors can be used with it. I guess I never thought about it much that people would hate it after a few years.

I hope I don't ...lol. I couldn't go through this again especially right here at Christmas. We ordered new cabinets as well which we are paying for and our contractors is installing them and doing extra work becasue he wants our claw foot tub. We are losing our bathtub but we have to do what we have to do.

The tile is beautiful, but if you go with browns in the paint, you will weigh the room down with brown floors, brown accent tiles, brown paint. Choose the paint color that is lighter, like one of the lighter colors in the accent tile. The three there are dark, plus the floor tile is kind of ho-hum brown too, so the dark floor plus the dark walls will make the room seem way smaller than it is. The dark floor is ok, but go lighter on the walls and the main tile for the shower unit, so not to weigh the room down.

The satin nickel finish on the faucet is beautiful along with the gorgeous sink. Don't forget to get a handicap toilet and do the hand rails while they are doing the tiles. You can add the handicap rails later, but might as well since they are making a mess anyway. They do make great towel bars as well.

Also I do hope you are planning on a bench of some sort or one of those pull down chairs to sit on to shower. Those are always wonderful for accessibility. My sister used one that you put into the tub when she had her knee operated on and couldn't put weight on it for 6 weeks with a 3 and 5 year old running around. She now sits in it to do their baths instead of the kiddy stool. It is so much handier and better on the back than the stool. We painted it with pretty spray paint so it isn't so much like a hospital object.

I would seriously rethink the whole brown for the floor and walls. Unless the room is huge and full of light, all that brown will be overwhelming with the only white or lighter colors being the sink and toilet. The brown paint will do that as well, so lightening that and the floor tiles will play wonderfully with the coppery accents in the accent tile. Find the accent tile you like first, then do the floor and paint from it. That way the whole room is playing off the accent tiles without them looking like an afterthought instead of intergrated into the idea from the start.

Thanks for the suggestions. The chips on top is for the grout. I wasn't thinking and should have mentioned that but the top right is lighter for the grout which will help lighten it up. I'm not sure how it would look with different tiles from the floor to shower because there isn't a lip or anything, so I'm wondering how the transition would look and that is what they guy said would be is the same tile but I can't see what it would matter.

I have the hand rails picked out already. They have to be installed for this to pass the VA's policy. I found a teak shower seat that folds down. Found one that has the oil rubbed bronze finish to it. Saw where some of them were made of plastic (hinges) that is crazy. Our toilet is ok already so he doens't have to replace it. Glad that your sister had something to sit on after her operation. Having a seat will help him greatly. A seat will help me too when I have to bath our animals

I would seriously consider lighter tile selections because light is so very important in a bathroom. Also, it makes the bathroom look less dated down the road. Accent tiles and such can quickly date a redesign. Maybe put your money in nice accessories and hand rails, pretty towels, windown treatments and things that can be changed over the years to spiff up and modernize the room as time goes by.

Thank you! I guess I am going to have to make another trip to Lowes. Not to much choices though. The walls outside the shower will be painted though and I will have a shower curtain and some type of window treatment. Not sure what though at this moment. I'm starting to run out of time.

If those chips are for grout, then the lighter two options are better. I think the dark one would just look like a grid on the floor instead of blending in. I can see usng the same tile for the floor and shower since the shower is a roll in shower. I would certainly go lighter on the paint color for the walls and curtains and towels.

The teak seat sounds so spa! I would go with a spa like feeling with nice robe hooks and accessories. The feeling would be calming and tranquil.

That accent tile looks like glass with the shine and depth to it. It really is pretty.

Wow, you have a great eye! Your choices are just perfect! Go for it exactly with what you have pictured! I would go with the lighter paint color on the walls. Be sure to post another finished picture when its all done!

The color of the tile I believe we are going with is the top right which all of the colors seems to look darker in the picture than what they are including the tile. The accent tile has plastic over it that I didn't take it off from where I bought it because I didn't know if I was going to have to return it or not. I have bought new towels already which will look great I believe

I didn't know that the teak seat came in an oil rubbed bronze finish with the hinges, so I think it will coordinate really well. You are so right ....spa like and tranquil. That is the look that I am after. I know with handciapped bathrooms they can look sterile and boring and I wanted to add warmth to it. I'm excited to have a nice bathroom because what we have now is old and boring with a clawfoot tub which is nice but my hubby can't get his legs lifted to get in it very well. He has MS and is having a lot of mobiltiy issues now.

Thank you about the accent tile. It has spoken to me out of all the accent pieces that I have bought and that has been a lot

Thank you ID2! I agree with you about the lighter paint and my shower curtain whatever I decide on will be lighter as well, so it will be broke up. I'm excited to see it come together after doing the leg work but nervouse too. I will post a pic when done which it will take a couple of weeks he said, so you know how that is with contractors and running into issues. I just hope he's done by Christmas because we will have to go to my moms to shower. Thank goodness she is only 3 miles away.

Yep, on the accent tile for sure. Adds a little punch to the bathroom. Your going with new tile and new tile just craves accent tile.

And, I would probably stick to the lightest grout color that truly blends in with the tiles themselves - I do not think the grout should differ much from the main color in the tile. You don't want the grout to be the focal point, the lovely tiles should be.

If one just jumps out and is telling you "pick me, pick me" - that is probably the one you will be the happiest with!

Thank you CAMOGIRL!! Our job has been postponed for a week or so because he is still on another job The accent tile really pops and that is what drew me too it. I went back to Lowes after posting this and bought two lighter colors and put things with it and my husband and I both hated it. Can't believe we agreed on something...hahaha. Awww we usuaslly have the same taste decorating though.

The grout isn't light and not dark either but I think it will compliment the two tiles. I will ask the contractor as well since he is used to do this stuff. I just received the second of the two shower curtains I ordered so I can pick which one I like the best and one has already jumped out of the package at me. From what I can tell it will absolutely gorgeous!!!

I also ordered the oil rubbed bronze shower seat from Home Depot so it will be on its way soon as well. I'm ready, now if everyone else would be too I would be much happier.

I love that accent tile... and with the burnished metals it will be gorgeous. As far as the other tile goes, I think you have a good idea of how it will turn out, along with the grout, and you and your husband agree, so now they just need to come to you and get it done, right???

Hopefully, you will post an "after" picture... I can't wait!
