GARLAND OR WREATH?

The hosts have often stated that garlands sell faster than wreaths. That surprises me. What are your feelings on this subject and why? Apparently, I need to come up with some fresh ideas for decorating with garlands. Thanks!

It surprises me too. Maybe they're just trying to gin up garland sales. I like a garland, but it seems you need just the right spot - a wide mantle, a bannister, over the front door, etc. A wreath can be put almost anyplace.

A garland is more versitile. You can drape it across your mantel, across an arch, around your front door, in the middle of a dinner table, or you can make a wreath out of it. A wreath just hangs around looking pretty.

I always buy garlands, and if I buy a wreath, I like the smaller so I can put a candle in the middle, or something else.

I have sold that stuff for a living, and I can attest to the fact that garlands always sell faster than wreaths. Not sure exactly why, but in my experience that is true. Could be that you need so darned many of them to make an impact, whereas a wreath is a statement on it's own.

I'm not a whole lot into decorating with either wreaths or garlands, but I do find that a wreath of any size draws attention to itself so it needs to be in a focus spot. A garland I seem to be able use many ways as either background or focus. That's why I know I've owned more garlands than wreaths.

I actually own more wreaths than garlands. So many garlands are stiff and scratchy and I don't want to use them on my furniture and don't like them draped over doors or windows. So, I look for garlands that are softer and flexible to use, and when I find them I keep using over and over. I'm still using one of David Shindler's garland from QVC several years ago but it is so nice.

@lucymo Me too! We just really don't have the large surface areas to really use the garlands.

I only have 4 garlands...3 of them are the VPH hydrangea garlands I have used for 3 yrs now (Spring/Summer) for along the top of our wall unit and curio cabinet and one is an 'as is' beaded fruit garland I will cut into pieces someday and either add the pieces to an apothecary jar or lay beside a lantern, etc.

I use these garlands on my window sills. I use pipe cleaners to fasten them under the window closing or the crank (where I have one) It's a fast and nice way to get some holiday in every room.

I am the opposite, lucymo, many more garlands than wreaths. Other than a countertop, I have no place for a wreath unless I stick them to my many walls of glass windows and sliders. I tried that once many years ago, forgot the wreath was on the slider, opened it, and the wreath went flying, LOL.

I have had no trouble bending Valerie's or Ellen's garlands. I just make them bend.

I have many more wreaths than garland for every season of the year. I guess it's because I make most of them.

That is interesting.

I always just (wrongly) assumed that QVC brings in fewer garlands than wreaths, which is why they are the first to go.
