How much does it cost for window replacement?

Hi! I’m planning to replace the windows of my house in order to improve the energy efficiency. The condition is miserable during winter and summer seasons because of the low energy efficiency of windows. We are planning to hire the window installers in our locality (Toronto), but before that I just want to know how much does the window replacement costs? I’m using this service for the first time. Is it something that I can do it by myself? I would appreciate any comments. Thanks!

Price really depends on the kind of windows you want. There are many brands from what I think are reasonably priced to very expensive. When I replaced the windows in my house, I went with a less expensive one and theyve held up very well, just as well as my parents expensive Pella windows.

Get some quotes and information from different window companies and compare.

I would ask neighbors and friends before buying new windows. New windows are no better than the install.

Price will vary WIDELY depending on quality. For just 1 window there was a price difference of $700.0 from the cheapest to most expensive option. My advice ONLY work with window companies, avoid Lowes and such. Have the measure, ordering and install done by one company that way if there is a problem there is only one company responsible (no finger pointing).

I agree with everyone else -- call several companies for quotes and you will see they are all over the place.You have to pay careful attention to what they are offering that is unique to each company.How much also depends on the size of the window and features you want. I highly recommend getting ones that you can flip the outside to the inside to clean. It makes it so much easier.

My house is only 5 years old but came with cheap windows and I would love to replace them.

Study the options and costs carefully. My neighbor just paid over $25,000 for all new windows. They will never live long enough to recoup that in energy costs.

Also, some energy efficient windows have a greenish tint that is obvious when hung. Those have changed the entire outside appearances to many houses ( and not in a good way, IMO).

Two different friends recently replaced their windows and they paid two widely different prices from two different local companies but I do.t know the quality differences. I live in a house that's around 100 years old and I haven't /won't change the Windows because I love the wavy bubble look in the original glass. It definitely isn't energy efficient. It is definite beautiful. Expensive and beautiful,LOL. Good luck,it's a big decision.

Please save yourself the aggravation and do not do window replacements from someplace like Home Depot. A very good friend used Home Depot...it was a nightmare as soon as a couple of the windows were delivered damaged.

We replaced 21 windows in our home 5 years ago in late winter. Companies are begging for winter work especially if you live in a cold climate so you may get a better deal by installing over the winter.

In the end we paid just over $13,000. Again, that was 5 years ago.

The energy costs have been awesome, but we had to replace our windows. More than one was rotting out of the frames...moisture between the panes...it wasn't good.

Get estimates, and ask neighbors if you can. We asked a neighbor across the street that did their windows 6 months before we did and I used Angie's List to pick the companies for the 3 quotes we got.

This is one place where you don't want to purchase the cheapest option -- there is a reason they are so cheap, and you will notice it soon. You don't want that. Buy a better quality and spend more per unit. Doesn't need to be the best, just not the least.

When our home was built in the 80's, we had double pane wooden sash windows, with separate storm windows installed. In 2004, we replaced with custom built double pane vinyl windows for about $2500. The company we chose advertised the windows for $189 each. The representative brought a sample window with him so we could see exactly how the frame is made, etc. they also trimmed the outside of each window with vinyl, so there is no painting to be done around the windows now. There is a lifetime guarantee on each window as long as we own the house. One window sash was broken when our house was robbed. We called the window company on Friday, and they were here with the new sash on Thursday. It took 3 weeks to make our windows, and they were installed within one day, including taking away all the old windows and storm windows. The company has since raised their per window price to $209 each. We have been very satisfied with our windows, and my mom and brothers have since used this same company to replace all of their windows as well.

I too would get more than one quote. Also, more expensive does not mean better. As to Home Depot we were selling a house and dh replaced all the windows himself with the ones from Home Depot. They were fine and we saved quite a bit of money. My husband is very handy and can do just about anything he wants to. He will research and work with professionals when given a chance just so he can learn something new. At 73 he is now building a new shed for our yard, did a major master bath reno last year, etc. We've done house additions and major remodels. It always comes out as good or better than pros.

Depending on type and size from expensive to extremely expensive. Windows are one of the costliest home improvements.

I will echo some other posters and suggest staying away from the Lowes and Home Depot type places and go directly to companies that do this only.

Evaluate exactly what you want to accomplish. Do you have a really high quality vintage home and want to preserve the integrity of that home, or do you have a less than stellar home that you'd like to update and make look and perform better?

For us, we wanted to get a better look than our old windows, better insulating but didn't feel that the house warranted super expensive wood windows. We repalced all windows except the large picture window in the front, and they cost about $500 each for vinyl with tilt in features. There is a lifetime guarantee, they and have the 'grids' (muntin)I so wanted to change the look of the house.

Don't get the cheapest thing you can find, but be realistic about just how much of an investment you feel the house is worth in this area.

11 years ago, I had all the windows replaced including a large custom Library window, a huge bay window (custom also) and a sliding glass door. I chose a window/siding/roof company that had been around for years, I knew their work and they used the same team to ONLY do windows- nothing else.

Top of the line then was $800 a window; had 17 standard windows and then the 3 custom, all with grids, all with a very very slight tint to block UVA. Windows were $450 a pop (special at the time), slider was $2500, Library (14 pane window) was $800 and the bay was $2200.

WORTH EVERY PENNY. No drafts and NO outside sound; couldn't hear the road crew outside jack-hammering 2 weeks later....found out when I went outside!

Do your research and pick carefully; take your time. Though cost is important, do not let it by your #1 reason to choose a company to do the work.

Window replacement is a good choice, especially to conserve energy. My sister did replace her windows two years back so the charges could've chaned but I can let you know of the company from which she did her window replacement - clera windows.

Do you know someone that is handy that you can hire? According to DH, windows are simple to replace. Just a thought.

There a different qualities of windows. The price goes up more if your windows aren't standard (in stock) sizes.

Of course, the bigger the window the more it costs also.
