Windchimes--- do you like them?

I got some new windchimes and hung them outside (wishful thinking for spring to hurry up and arrive, I guess). DH said, wow those chimes are loud outside. Now I am wondering, if I am driving my neighbors crazy. Do you like windchimes? Should I consider that they may annoy the neighbors??

I detest the sound of wind chimes. They are about as relaxing (to me) as a constantly dripping water faucet. I realize, though, that people like yourself enjoy them. A good compromise, and a way to be a terrific neighbor, would be to enjoy your wind chime when you are gardening, having a yard party/barbecue, or are otherwise outside reading a book, sunning yourself, etc., THEN take it back inside with you (much like you would any other music) when you go indoors. That way, the people who are annoyed by it, and believe me there are plenty of us out there (!), will know that the noise will eventually go away at some point.

I like the gentle, tinkling chimes which are soothing, not loud church chimes, so to speak.

My family loves wind chimes, and we have 2 small ones on the front porch, and a larger one hanging near the garage. As much as we like them, we all agreed they cannot be hung near bedrooms.

While I'm not a fan of the ones that make metallic\, tinkly sounds, I do like bamboo chimes. But even those can be annoying on a very windy day. They're pretty, though.

I LOVE them but only if they are well-tuned and melodic. Mine are. I don't worry about the neighbors. They have their own annoying things! It all evens out!

I find any constant noise irritating, so I wouldn't be very happy if a neighbor had wind chimes sounding all the time.

I wouldn't use them all the time if I had close neighbors or I don't want to hear them constantly either, doesn't matter what sound they are.

At my mom and dad's senior apartment complex, every apartment has a small balcony. They are all close to one another. Many of the tenants have windchimes. I find the sound irritating, but not enough to complain to a neighbor about it. There are worse things, like incessently barking dogs, left out on the balcony all day.

I like them and have several different kinds in different places in my garden. Our homes have enough property between them that I don't think the neighbors would hear them.

I like windchimes in theory. However, in my apartment complex, chimes are another annoying sound--right up there with screaming children, unanswered car alarms, and noisy mufflers. LOL

Thank you for the reference. The basso profundo sounds lovely, but $2950 is quite a bit to spend on a wind chime, IMO.

If anyone is interested in wind chime sounds, or other nature sounds to help you sleep, I use a specific app that I have on my phone that I put on when I go to sleep. I bluetooth my phone to my Bose speaker in the corner of my bedroom, and I'm able to listen to thunderstorms, water sounds, and other ambient sounds in realistic fashion as I fall asleep. I use one called Sleep Pillow Sounds: white noise machine app (the app's icon is a blue owl). Not only can you choose a thunderstorm, wind, crackling fire, or windchimes, you can actually combine up to three of the sounds and make a recipe (which you can save). You can put them on timers as well, so they can shut off anywhere from 5 minutes to 12 hours until after you set it. It may sound a little complicated, but trust me, it's SO user friendly, and after a couple minutes, you'll get the hang of it and have so much fun creating your own scenes.

This topic comes up from time to time. I'm always enjoy reading the differing views. My BIL bought us a beautiful set of chimes from Hawaii and paid quite a bit for them I think. I do like the sound. We live on a large lot but I don't put them out out of consideration for my neighbors.

If I do it for a short time, I always tie them up after a couple of hours as they are a large set. Lovely sound in small doses! LM

I love windchimes! The soft tinkling ones. But I live in an apartment & there is nowhere to use them.

If I lived in a house I would worry about bothering neighbors, too. You could probably just ask them if it bothers them.

I have several sets of windchimes, but only have two hanging at a time, one on front porch; and one on back deck. I admit, that sometimes depending upon my frame of mind they can be annoying.

We have four acres here, so I don't think they are offensive to any of our neighbors.

I remember as a child, mom used to buy glass ones at the 5&10 store. I loved the sound of them and have looked high and low and can't find any that duplicate the sound. Perhaps it is just the warm memories of childhood that makes me sentimental about them. She'd usually have to purchase a new set every year because they were so delicate they would break if it got too windy. I have two beautiful set of hand made stained glass ones I purchased on eBay, but they are so heavy they barely move.

I like wind chimes. I don't like the real loud ones .I owned one made of wood that I got in the Bahamas and they were nice and not noisy.

Sorry, another no. I would rather hear a car alarm! But as a pp suggested -hang them when you are outside relaxing and take the in when you are done.
