Really! littering! !

On my way to work the other day and I was listening to a converstion on the radio that made my blood boil.

Callers were aurguing that throwing cigerette buts out of their car window or on the ground when outside smoking is NOT littering because they biodegrade quickly. !!!!!!!!

I can not believe how many callers were CLUELESS about this.

The filters are made of cellulose acetate fibers- they take 2 to 12 years to decompose.

Not to mention the fire hazards in drought areas.

In my state, throwing an apple core -- 100% biodegradable -- will get you a $500 littering fine. As it should be, imho.

We get everything thrown out in our yard. There have been soiled diapers (both adult and child), bottles, cans, fast food bags/wrappers, pizza boxes, losing lottery tickets and more. Our local communities now all charge for trash pickup, so lots of people just throw their trash out along the road. Whenever the fee for trash pickup goes up, so does the volume of junk that gets thrown out along the roadside.

Back in the 60s or 70s there were a number of commercials/ads for keeping the environment clean and against littering. The crying native american was the most famous, but there were several.

I often wish we'd bring those back. I think people need to be re-educated.

This is a disgusting shame!

I do not even understand this. I have always paid for trash and recycling pick-up.

I have always lived in communties where there was no choice; a contract was issued to the highest bidder and that is who and what all the homeowners are charged. No options, live here and pay for trash removal. Maybe that helps with illegeal dumping in some areas.

I am sorry for you Gardenman, you should not have to put up that!

I'm thinking an angry homeowner with a shotgun might be more effective than a crying native American these days. Ah heck, give the homeowner an Uzi instead of a shotgun. I kind of like the idea that every time they throw something out of the car, you get to fire a shot back into the car. I'm thinking that would be pretty effective at stopping littering. Oh sure, there might be a bit of collateral damage, but those things happen. (If you can't tell, I'm more than a little fed up with littering.)

Littering is just plain lazy IMO. There are plenty of garbage cans and recycling bins around for items.

It is really bad out in the country as well, because people think no one is going to see them, when they either litter, or more aggressively, dump along the roadsides.

And it seems to cut across all socio economic levels of society. I see it in wealthy areas, economically disadvantaged areas, rural and city. Even the Amish in our area, who people believe to be stewards of the earth (oh so not!) will be routinely seen tossing trash out of the buggies as the drive down the road.

When my daughter was little, we were driving down the road and she was sitting in the backseat. The weather was warm and we had the windows open. Some slob tossed his cigarette out his car window and into our backseat it went....just missing my daughter. It did burn a hole in my seat.

Now I drive with either heat or a/c. No open windows.....for so many reasons now.

That is very offensive and ignorant. As an ex smker I would like to tell you ...you are full of it.

Also I live in a very nice neighborhood. Many wealthy people bring up brats that throw all their party and boozing bottles all over. All week I will find fire work debris from their huge dispalys. WHne I get sick of it, I grab a few big trash bags and start to pick it all up. People drive by and get inspired and thank me.

That is disgusting! If you could catch them and get a picture would the local law enforcement people do anything about it? Sometimes, people report and nothing is ever done about it. I'm so sorry that you have to tolerate such behavior, just not right.

I'm always around. I did get banned here for a day, but that was a few days back now. Oddly they raised my posting status just before banning me. It was kind of ironic. 'We love you and want to reward you for being a valued poster, oh, and you're banned.' Okay then.

Painting with a very broad brush, to say the least. At the risk of offending -- you took the risk and did a bang-up job of it!

I'm not a smoker, but I did smoke for a while "back in the day"... that said, some of the nicest, kindest, honest, thoughtful, and considerate people I ever knew were smokers at one time or another. It was not impossible to be a smoker and be considerate about it - the two are not necessarily mutually exclusive. Not to mention that nicotine is one of the MOST addictive substances known to man.

So while we're offending people, I could say that drinkers are some of the most rude, thoughtless, and inconsiderate people - you name it, wine, beer, gin, bourbon, whatever. Maybe smoking did harm to other people, but not like this:

Every day, almost 30 people in the United States die in motor vehicle crashes that involve an alcohol-impaired driver. This amounts to one death every 51 minutes.

And I see beer bottles and cans, etc. littering our roadways and our parks and our beaches . Why wouldn't one think to complain about those thoughtless, inconsiderate, people?

And of course, we could also name the ones who throw out bags from fast food restaurants on the roadways and streets, from some very fancy cars sometimes, I might add... and into my own yard, along with a beer can once in a while.

The problem of littering crosses all socioeconomic and ethnic lines - one might be surprised at what their wealthy neighbors, their own family members, and friends do when they think no one is looking.
