Last weekend we were in the process of replacing our glass door shower. My dh removed and carried out the first door to set out at the curb for our garbage pick up. I waited for him at our front door when he was carrying down the second door. As I held the door open for him, as soon as the second door hit the cold air it shattered into a million pieces!!! All over our front porch, some of it came into my foyer. I was on my hands and knees trying to find every last piece. We have kitties and I surely didn't want one of them stepping on one! That was the oddest thing! The doors weren't wet. And why only one of the doors broke is strange.

. . . my bedroom window cracked last night!

In Michigan our low last night was well below zero, my thermostat was set at 67 and my furnace was pumping almost nonstop all night. Just before my alarm was set to go off, I heard a BANG. At first I didn't think too much of it; when it's this bitter cold the building pops and groans at times. Then I started hearing smaller, short noises that I would describe as a type of "ripping" noise, every 10-20 seconds. After several minutes it stopped. When the sun came up I looked out and the inside pane of my double-pane window was cracked from top to bottom! Evidently the window frame warped or was out of alignment somehow.

The windows are less than 18 mos. old so hopefully they are under warranty. I put some clear packing tape over the crack and will stop at the hardware store on my way home from work and get one of those plastic film window insulating kits. The window company is coming out in a week to replace the window.

WOW - I thought I heard that same noise last night - and I have almost window 'walls' in my hut. I better go back and check my windows. There was so much condensation on the windows this morning between showers and cooking - I looked around but not much.

On 2/20/2015 graycatsrule said: Do you keep curtains or shades closed on the window most of the time? When I keep my bedroom shades drawn for days, I end up with frost on the inside of the window. The air doesn't get to circulate.

I have a shade and insulating curtains on this particular window, but I open them every morning because it's one of my cats' favorite windows to look out of. There's a tree just outside with a lot of bird activity, plus people and traffic going by.

I put some clear packing tape along the crack and got one of those clear plastic film window insulating kits and put that over the inside window frame until they can get here to fix it. The last couple nights were bitterly cold as well with lots of loud pops and booms in the structure, but so far the rest of my windows are intact.

The cold has so much of the country. I guess the West Coast is the only area that is enjoying some warm weather. We broke a record this AM in Pgh -9. So ready to get this over with. We had snow over the weekend then turning to ice. Now our snow is coated with ice. My poor dog will not even go out in the yard because she does not like the ice. It has been taxing getting her to go to the bathroom.

Suzeecat, isn't it horribly cold though? Right now it's only 12 on my outside thermostat, and in the car after groceries, it registered 7 on the car thermostat. I think we'll all be so happy for warmth and more and longer sun this year. I'm in majorly bad need of it. Just said that in the car today.

This morning on the news, they were talking about cold quakes. And I think I experienced one at work yesterday. We were having a meeting in conference room on the top floor of our building and there was a big "crack" sound and I swear the room even swayed a little. It was more than a little unsettling. And then this morning, they said that in MA, there have been 1000 reports of cold quakes so far. Something about the outside of a building being so much colder than the inside for an extended period of time; buildings contract and expand causing a "cracking" sound and sometimes there is some shifting.

I've had that happen. It was a summer morning I'd forgotten to adjust the AC before I went to bed, so it got pretty chilly inside. The window guy said it can happen when the temperature outside is too different from the temperature inside. The sound was EXACTLY as you described.
