My house was built in 1960, split level....has open doorways to all rooms except bedrooms, bathrooms. It has ugly popcorn ceilings and I have always hated them. I am playing with the idea of installing white beadboard on all the ceilings in the house. Does anyone have them or what is your opinion of this idea.

Will check back later, am shampooing carpets and doing laundry now. Thanks in advance for your opinions and ideas.

My son-in-law and daughter have their own construction company. My son-in-law frequently uses beadboard on ceilings, including his own home to solve the issue of the popcorn ceiling. It looks really great!

I have original 12ft high white beadboard ceilings but my house is at least 100 years old. I love them . I think I would look into what fits the style of your house. If it's modern, maybe it won t feel right. If it's rustic, the white beadboard might be too bright. Maybe a smooth ceiling ?I try to go with the basic house style, plus my decorating style. Can't wait to hear what you choose.

Well, let's see, it's definitely not modern, moved from a modern style home to this one and none of my décor worked here, lol. It, IMO, is semi rustic, casual. Just thinking that putting up beadboard will be easier, less messy, and quicker than taking all that yucky popcorn off the ceilings. Thanks for all your posts. I will have to convince my hubby, I have mentioned it to him before and he wasn't all for it. We'll see.

Love beadboard ceilings, but only with the right decor. Joanna uses it all the time on Fixer Uppers on HGTV and it would probably be better than popcorn ceilings. That said, I have to agree that in a 1960s "modern" home, I would go with smooth ceilings.

Before we remolded our home and built a very large addition on to it there were four rooms that had bead board ceilings and we covered them up because it wasn't in style. I am thinking it would be great to take the covering down and have the bead board ceiling again. That is my thought but if I present this idea to my family I know I will get nasty comments telling me I have to be out of my mind etc. They will never agree to this idea. But I have bead board ceilings and they have been in this home for probably 85 years. I have been here for 54 years. All the rest of our rooms plus the large addition are all plastered walls. I like plastered walls if I would ever build another home instead of dry wall I would pay the extra and have the interior all plastered.

I'd go with the smooth look. In fact, I did have popcorn ceilings in my house. I hired a contractor to put quarter inch dry wall on top of the popcorn, then I primed and painted. Didn't cost that much and it looks great.

If it really fits the style of the house it might be ok. For me, it would be a real turn-off and probably keep me from putting the house high on my list of ones to purchase. It just isn't my style at all and would be too expensive and a mess to replace.

My sister used to live in a house that was built in the 1800's. It had board on the kitchen ceiling. Her husband wanted to brighten the room and painted it pale yellow. She loved it. Me not so much. I'd have the popcorn scrapped off. JMO.

The amount of asbestos can be more or less, depending on the year they were sprayed onto the ceiling. I had the popcorn in my house tested, and the asbestos level was high enough that it would require a hazmat company to scrape the ceilings. The cost was around $3,000. When you cover the popcorn with drywall, the asbestos is entrapped and no longer a danger.

To each his own.

Popcorn ceilings have been made with asbestos. I've learned a lot about this recently, as I've been dealing with asbestos insulation that was found in my attic. In fact, this Monday I have an asbestos removal company scheduled to come out and remove that from my attic. It's very hazardous and removal is done by specialized companies. They suit up in hazmat type suites and will seal off the house while this process is going on. They use special machines, both in the attic while they are working and inside of my house, and measure air quality during the entire process. I cannot be in the house while the work is going on, and cannot enter back into the house until the machine measures the correct air quality. this all started with me wanting to do good and add adequate layer of insulation in the attic for energy savings. Well...here is where I am now, lol. no insulation company would do work or go into the attic until the asbestos was removed. Once I get all clear certificate from asbestos company I can then hire the attic insulation guys to put the insulation needed in, and at correct level this time...without asbestos, lol. So please, please, please get your popcorn ceiling tested for asbestos. If it comes back positive you should really think about having it removed.

I get the concern for actual popcorn ceilings, but have found that many people are confusing textured ceilings with a popcorn ceiling. My husband and I built our home with the limited help of a contractor, and I know that every ceiling in my home is textured. The same compound used to cover the nail heads and seal the sheetrock seams was rolled on the ceiling with a textured roller.
