I want to learn to quilt so I decided to make a tote bag that is a quilting project to learn on. OMG - I bought the pattern - 6 fabric quarters and the interfacing , lining fabric and it cost me $36. I bought a bunch of other stuff like a pair of new scissors and some embroidery thread and fabrics. My bill in total was $82!!! Yikes. I can remember when embroidery thread was 10 cents - now it is 40 cents and not as much thread either. I am making 6 kitchen towels each embroidered for a seasonal theme - those towels with the even weave fabric on them were very pricey, like $6 each so I only bought 4 for now.

I did have a fun day at the fabric store though.

I have been watching a new - at least to me - TV show on Hallmark channel called "Sew it all". They demo making a project every day - today was a tote bag. I have really been enjoying this show. It is also on line at sew it all.com and you can watch episodes all the way through. it really inspires me. Here where I live , it is on at 1PM weekdays. I generally do not watch much TV during the day - i have no interest in talk shows - but this show is wonderful. I need a trip to the fabric store!

I wouldn't say enjoy. Sometimes I do sew things out of necessity. The last time I made anything was my Mother of the bride dress in 2003 for my younger daughter's wedding. I simply could not find anything in the stores at the time. Years ago I made some maternity tops and some clothes for our children. I sometimes alter things to make them fit better. The most recent was a purple leather skirt. I'm uneasy about working with leather, but I can do it.

NO! Alas, my Niece is the only relative that I can think of, that sews, or is at all "crafty". She's very into scrap booking, and has done some, really beautiful, family scrapbooks. I hated sewing, in Home Ec, at school, though, I enjoyed cooking, hmmmm! As an adult, I never had any interest in sewing, though, I admire people that sew, knit, crochet To be honest, even I had the skills, I'd have a hard time, finding the time.

I started sewing many years ago and used to make all of my own clothes. Then, except for things like curtains, I stopped for a long time.

Over the past three years, I've taken up machine embroidery and have started to take quilting classes. Don't think I'll ever be interested in garment sewing again.

Looked for the show, and couldn't find it on Hallmark. And, the only way to view online was to buy a subscription.

I did check out the website and it says that it is on many PBS channels, but it isn't on any in our area. Too bad. It looks interesting.

I enjoy sewing. I'm not great at it, don't like to have to follow a pattern. It's like a math problem & my mind can't handle it. LOL I guess I do crafty sewing. Curtains, shower curtains, pillows, costumes, things that I can make easily without too much of a pattern.

My mom was a beautiful seamstress and did nice hand work, as well as smocking by hand.

I need to see the segment on making a tote, I purchased fabric several years ago to make one and I got it cut out, got thru a couple of steps, read thru the rest of the instructions and folded it back up.....I felt overwhelmed.

My mom taught me. I think everyone should has some degree of ability in sewing. I consider it a survival skill. My son is 10, and yes he knows how to sew. He can hem his pants already. My mom was just amazing. She could sew without a pattern. She had a dressmaker's dummy. In Italy is seemed most people sewed (men too). She made most of my clothes (including one coat) when I was in grade school. The last big project she made was my wedding dress. I purchased the train and the veil. My mom did the dress. She also sewed my sister's wedding dress.

Sewing and me don't work well together. I can see buttons, mend a seam, and in desperation sewed the long side of 2 silk shams to fit smaller pillows. Loved the shams that much!!! Afterwards, I am sure I wasn't pleasant to be around! My mother sent me to Singer Sewing store when I was 15 and I made a dropped torso print dress with a bow on the side. After observing tantrums and overhearing my language, she decided no more thread and needle for her daughter. Gee, if that was all it took.....LOL

I love to sew. My mother was an expert seamstress and I used to watch her all the time. I used to make a lot of my clothes, and then when I had kids, I made some of their clothes. My kids always had beautiful Halloween costumes. Now I love to sew quilts, quilts, quilts. I love everything about quilts, from their history, to designing the pattern to picking out the fabric. For some comic relief, I like to make tote bags. I made my granddaughters tote bags for their books made out of used jeans I picked up at the thrift store. Those bags made a huge hit at their school! I haven't heard about the Hallmark show to which you refer. I work full time, so I'm not home during the day. I'll check out the online version. Thanks for the tip.

Nope, sewing was never my thing. My mom does almost everything - quilts, sews, knits, crochets, cross stitch, does needlepoint, and more. She also paints in a variety of styles and mediums. She did some beading and clay work, but didn't spend as much time on those as her other arts. One of her aunts was a famous weaver, one of her sister's edits crafting books and magazines, and her other sister is also a quilter. I was so, SO lucky growing up because I got to dabble in ALL the things and I benefited immensely from her talents.

She made many clothes and costumes for me and altered FAR more. One year I bought a vintage dress for $15 and she helped me transform it into something lovely. She also helped me alter an off-the-rack strapless prom dress so that it looked more unique AND I wouldn't spend the evening tugging it back into place. The dress was very popular that year in many colors, but mine stood out because of my mom's alterations.

I knit, cross stitch, bead, and do a lot of other crafts, but the sewing (the most practical craft!) was never my favorite and I generally avoid it. I really only pull out a needle and thread when I need to mend something or make sure a button doesn't fall off.

I love to sew-been doing it for over 40 years! When I was in 7th grade I won first prize at a 4H competition, and have been sewing ever since. When I worked I made all my own suits, then when my daughter was born I sewed much of her wardrobe. Over the years I have been doing more machine embroidery, but recently got back into actually sewing. I don't have a fabric store less than 30 miles away, so I order a lot from fabric websites. But sewing is the only thing that keeps me sane at times! LOL

I can't imagine raising children and not having basic, rudimentary sewing skills for mending. It also amazes me that so many women here speak of taking their pants out for heming. You-know-where would freeze over before I'd pay someone to hem a pair of pants. I used to sew all my work wardrobe like suits and dressy blouses; thankfully gave that up but do occasionally mend, hem and make curtains or a pillow.

I have sewed off and on since high school Home Ec class. I made toddler clothes when my oldest one was little and a few clothes for myself....then didn't do much till my youngest who is now 31 was in dance and plays. I made all her costumes for Meet Me In St. Louis. She played Tootie in our community theater production. She had to have several dresses with pinafores and a nightgown. As I was working full time it was a chore sometime so I didn't do a lot of other sewing until recently. I made American Girl doll clothes for my youngest granddaughter for Christmas this year. Needless to say it was a big hit with her and I really enjoyed it. I have never made a quilt but would love to try one. I did put a binding on an unfinished quilt from my grandmother.
