Preserving mini hay bales

It's been a while since we've used these in fall/Halloween decorating. I remember before I bought some aerosol hairspray and sprayed them. Has anyone else done this, or is there a better way to make them last? I think the last ones I had lasted a few years at least!

Use Aqua Net hairspray. The old kind.

I bought mine at Dollar General & I think Walmart still sells it. It's the purple can, the one that made our hair stiff, lol. I use it for dried flowers, to clean silk plants. I gathered pu$$y willows at the creek, sprayed them & they lasted till I tossed them 4 years later.
