I am doing the master bedroom and bath rebuild. I ripped bath and bedroom down to the bones, and went from there. My bath is off the closet /dressing room area. It is really small. It has a five foot shower, with clear doors, a toilet and a 44 inch custom vanity . Although we rebuilt everything, even closets , we left the old hardwoods in bedroom and dressing area, as they are 55 years old and still good. They will be refinished.

Here is the problem. I am not fond of tile in this bath, as I have arthritic issues and don't want to slip. I am 66 and plan on living here until the kids inherit it. LOL! I really haven't found a vinyl I liked. I have a marble shower and will get some kind of stone counter top. I sort of want solid color floors. I thought I could have them install bamboo or hardwood flooring in bath when they refinish bedroom floors.

They could do several coats of finish. Does anyone have hardwoods in bath? I am pretty OCD about protecting my things around the home. So we would be careful about water.

What do you all think? Do you have hardwood in bath or know anyone who does?

I have laminated flooring in my bathroom and throughout my whole house, it's a little house. I use the Haans steam cleaner. Just need to protect it when showering, giving my dogs their baths. It is four years now and no issues with the flooring lifting.

Your homes sounds beautiful. I do know someone who has it, but she has a huge bathroom you could dance in, and it is really open. Who knew? Sort of a new concept to me too.. Water could get in around edges, just like tile or vinyl. But I guess if you had a really steamy bathroom or poor ventilation I would think they would mold or get soft?

But pictures online are one thing, and contractors can say a lot of things. That is why I wondered if there were real people like you and me, who actually have them, and use them! LOL!

True wood will present a number of headaches. One serious pluming problem and you will regret it. When they have to tear up your nice flooring for repairs it will get very costly. Besides, even sealed wood expands and contracts around water, and with steam and heat. Also , annual weather changes will affect it as well. Also, mold and mildew that you won't be aware of will cause significant problems.

Now they make a huge variety of flooring that can imitate wood, vinyl or other types that I'm sure you can find to your liking that can keep a look that you like and be very safe.

Do you have hardwood in bath or know anyone who does?

If you use wood or some other natural fiber on the floor, you have to seal it. It would require a very good seal. It would be sealed to a surface not unlike tile as far as slip-factor goes. So you'd recreate the problem you are trying to avoid. Hard wood floors do not give you a "grip" unless they are unsealed hardwood floors which would have enough surface friction for your foot to feel more and be more secure. But you need to seal the wood, because, if not sealed the wood would be a stained and deteriorating mess.

There are non-slip tiles. There are tiles which have a rough surface too, and actually have more texture and grip-ability than sealed wood.

Here's a link for non-slip bathroom tile in Teak wood (the material is "ceramic", but it is designed to look like wood. It is nonslip:

http://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/600-600mm-non-slip-bathroom-floor_1675053205.html?s=p

It even states on the bottle, doesn't it, NOT to use on stairs because it makes the wood slippery.

I'll see if I have a bottle, so I'll BRB with an edit.

My bottle doesn't have that warning (in regard to stairs), but I do remember reading not to use it on wooden stairs… Not sure where, so I never have.

I find Murphy's oil, no matter how you use it, will leave a more slicker surface. That is my experience. If others love the stuff, it is good for wood, but to use it on the floor, think twice, imo, if you have small children, pets, or anyone who may slide easily or has a fall risk.

Yes, we do. When we remodeled, we turned one of the bedrooms that had a common wall to the master bedroom into a master bath. It already had red oak hardwood since it was once a bedroom, and we left the floors as is because I couldn't bear to cover them with vinyl. That's been 12 years and we have had no "issues" whatsoever.

Wood, even treated wood, is prone to mold from the smallest bit of moisture. You are not needing to bleach or use an anti fungal on the wood? Or have you gotten up close enough to see it, look in cracks, corners, any dark spots or hazing (under seal). There can be rotting wood hidden under a shiny coat on top. This has happened even with tile floors. The tile is so shiny and nice and the wooden floor below (protected by the entirety of tile on top of it with proper grouting even) will be moldy, rotting and full of decay and spores.

I would go for heated tile floors. Hardwood and water don't mix well.

On 10/14/2014 ical said:
On 10/14/2014 twopeas said:

No issues? Not even mold spores? Wood, even treated wood, is prone to mold from the smallest bit of moisture. You are not needing to bleach or use an anti fungal on the wood? Or have you gotten up close enough to see it, look in cracks, corners, any dark spots or hazing (under seal). There can be rotting wood hidden under a shiny coat on top. This has happened even with tile floors. The tile is so shiny and nice and the wooden floor below (protected by the entirety of tile on top of it with proper grouting even) will be moldy, rotting and full of decay and spores.

Again ~ NO issues.

my bathroom had floors that were 53 years old and the water caused mold. The mold rested under the floor for 2 yrs appearing dry and aged on surface but at 55 yrs it was a mess.

3 bathrooms were all but torn apart . We replaced 2 upstairs with custom tile. I did not like THE OLD SCREECHY AGED sound on the ground floor and it was redone as well and MY CUSTOM VANITY IS A CHERISHED PRIZE. Not old and screechy anymore

I would think wet hardwood would be very slippery. I would look at Terrazzo tile.
