I am a big fan of Sarah Richardson. Candice Olson too. I wish I could post pictures, but I dont know how. I am pretty sure I am going with the light blues and gray colors. I have had so much fun reading all of the posts. I guess I really need a change.

As I sit here and look at my foyer, living room and dining room. I am in decorating shock at how bad it looks. Everyone say's how beautiful and inviting my home is. It's a 1917 bungalow. Wallpaper !! Yes you heard me. Floral, done in the complimentary prints as was so popular 20 years ago. What is wrong with me? Cranberry and sage greens. Oh , I need help. Well time to get updated. When I watch any home show and they come into the house when it has wall paper. What is the first thing they say? omg! That has to go. I'm 64 , I want a fresh new look. I'm done with the old look. Light Blues, grays and whites. Now what to do with some of these antiques, some I will use. My husband thinks this is crazy, he doesn't know me. Lol. I did a total kitchen remodel four years ago. So now of course these rooms looks terrible.

I think your home sounds beautiful as it is now. I don't care what designers, or so-called experts say..........I personally LOVE wallpaper! The only reason I don't have it in my home is because I live in an apartment.

The only reason you should change your decor is to suit yourself. If you are tired of your look, by all means change it. If you still like it, you are the one who lives with it. My decorating style is to please my husband, son, and me!

I'm trying to slowly re-do all of my 1993 decor, so I am not one to judge.

I know my house looks dated, it's just that every time I start the process of hiring to get new linoleum, tile, painting, drywall repair, something happens at work and I do not want to spend my available cash. It's a small townhouse, so no one will take on just one room. I have to do (at a minimum) one level at a time.

We moved into our present home and did nothing to its design. My living room is beige with one wall a darker beige. This wall runs into the kitchen. Carpet is Berber which we love. Our basement is finished with 2 walls light beige, one wall a darker beige and the 2rd wall is red. It makes the basement feel so much warmer. We live in Nebraska so everyone has a basement. This will be our last house so we have kept all the beige walls and carpet. Makes it sell much easier. We have pulled in color with accessories. We really like it.

If you want to update, then you should. Floral wall paper is dated.

Wallpaper is making a comeback - a lot of geometric patterns rather than florals though.

GO for it! I agree it is time to get a new look. Anything gets stale (well except US! ha ha). You will have many years to enjoy a cleaner, less fussy look with fresh paint and colors you love.

First I would look at your furniture. Do you need all of it? Does everything have a place and purpose? Do you LOVE all of it? Sometimes getting rid of a few pieces can do wonders--especially if you have a lot of small pieces. Maybe a new upholstered piece? Slipcovers?

Next I'd evaluate walls and carpets--see which are in worse shape and get of the worst that you see all time, but keeping in line with the rest of your house. If your house is beige and brown, don't add something stark white. etc.

Maybe painting the trim in a room or two would perk things up? Colored trim is in style now.

Decide on a color scheme and work toward it. Try out some pillows in those colors to see what you think!

Maybe new faucets in the kitchen and or bath would look great.

Maybe a few backsplash would update the kitchen. Glass tiles? A colored subway tile (these sometimes don't cost a lot and might be a good first step)?

Have fun and enjoy looking forward to adding some spice to your life!

Wallpaper has been "out" for several years, but I've noticed more and more of it showing up in recent TV presentations and home decorating magazines -- often in new, "contemporary" patterns, but also in some more traditional ones. Especially in an older home like yours, wallpaper may have a perfectly valid place. Everything old is new again, if you wait long enough! If you're ready to redo your decor, that's fine, but take some time to look at options, styles, and colors before you decide. You should check out new trends and possibilities and then decorate your home to please yourself. You can do a lot to freshen things up just with fresh paint, wallpaper (or not), editing and rearranging things, and adding some new accessories (plants, throws, pillows, pottery, etc.) to the mix.

http://www.hgtv.com/decorating-basics/design-trend-contemporary-wallpaper/pictures/index.html

http://www.styleathome.com/shopping/great-stuff/10-wallpaper-patterns-you-ll-love/a/32504

http://www.realtor.com/advice/what-comes-around-wallpaper-is-back-in-style-photos/

As long as you don't need to totally replace furniture and other big expense items - why not just take down the wallpaper - do any needed repairs - and paint. You can always get slipcovers. It may not need the major overhaul you think it does.

When i wanted a kitchen redo once I found I was perfectly happy with just taking off wallpaper and painting then replacing the fabric on the kitchen chairs - an easy do it yourself project and cheap too.

You're worrying way too much about being "outdated." Good grief, most of the twits on HGTV would gut a kitchen if it had oak cabinets. I'm 69 and thankfully, I realize I"m the one living in my house and if someone doesn't like it, it's their problem, not mine.

It is such a shame that oak cabinets went out of style - they are so pretty IMO. Anyway - i have maple cabinets and thought the oak ones in my previous home were much better. It is no surprize to anyone I'm sure that the building and fashion industry just work round the clock to ,make us all feel our homes aren't up to standard so they can make you want to get rid of the outdated and buy buy buy. It is all a big scam to separate us from our $$$$. I am also just as certain that is the entire reason HGTV exists in the first place. To assure that we all are told often how outdated we are so we go run out to buy all new everything.
