There's some overlap.........but primitive tends to be very simple and spare. Think Shaker furniture, hand-crafted furniture, a focus on simple, utilitarian objects. Country has some of that, but can also involve a lot of ruffles, accessories, and clutter-y decor, or can go much more upscale and fancy if you move into "country estate" style.......

Did you see the blog post from Q host Amy on her home? Not 100% primitive but with some touches. You might enjoy it! I have a mix of Pottery Barn, primitive (folk art), and vintage.

This is a very interesting question. Decor styles are very hard to nail down, and most people actually combine two or more in their decor.

I enjoy (love actually) primitive decor as it relates to early American decor (no, not that horrendous style that was all the rage in the late 50's early 60's with the ruffled lamp shades and all!!!!). The real early/primitive look that is featured in period homes of the 17th and 18th centuries. That look is very appealing to me, but then I'm a big history buff as well.

When I think primitive I think of things like twig chairs, and herbs in bunches hanging from the ceiling. Thatched roofs.

though I have many antiques primitive is not my style at all.

It's an interesting look and I love a few pieces mixed in with other styles, but I'm not sure I'd enjoy it as an exclusive style. I also think primitive pieces must really be primitive or very well executed reproductions and not cheap copies in order for this look to work for me. I'll look at a magazine and someone will be talking about their 'primitive' look when anyone can see that some of the furniture so touted is obviously rather on the new side and mass produced.

Another thing I don't like is the peeling paint look on antiques. I have many pieces of antique furniture - they all called out to me to strip off that old paint and make them look new and pretty again, so i did. I think that look should have gone the same way as 1980's country look.My DH and I have gotten very good at making the old look new again. This winter our project is going to be a redo of my vanity.

I don't mind a piece or two with paint that has worn off in spots, as long as it isn't still flaking... but I so agree that the notion of a whole house full of 'shabby chic' with all that flaking white paint, rust, and everything looking as though it was rescued from the scrap heap is not to my liking. Too, there's a real limit as to how much 're-purposing' I'm going to be interested in... and truly, the quotient isn't going to be very high!

I love the primitive kind of décor, but I don't have it myself. I guess I need more clutter and a more cozy feel to my surroundings. But I love to look at how people decorate in the primitive style.

I remember years back seeing a large home that Linda Dano had, I think in Connecticut, when her husband was still alive, and if I remember correctly it was done in a primitive style and I loved it.

I remember the first time Country Living magazine put an antique oak table, chairs, and a cabinet on the cover, all painted white. I hated it then and I hate it now. I'd rather see a piece completely refinished than painted white.

I love prims. My home is done is country and I have a few primitive pieces. I would love to have a big old country home and do it all primitive.

When we got our new camper last year I decided to decorate it in country style since we actually do live in the country here. The basic style of all campers it seems is traditional - raised panel doors etc and , of course, a lot of wood. This camper is a pretty med toned cherry wood. I bought a few things to hang on the walls at fairs and local markets and a good friend gave me a really pretty stained glass cardinal plaque to hang on a window. I was able to meet my goal of a country look but a 2014 country look not a 1980 country look. I didi find a few pieces at Cracker barrel that helped a lot. IMO primitive does not go well with modern country look.

I'm not sure exactly what primitive is, but I don't think I would like it.

My style is not country, folk, antique, or rustic.

Have you looked at Amy Strans blog? Her home is decorated along those lines. Very simplistic and clean. She has photos of all of her rooms along with details about the pieces.

I just looked at it. It's very nice. She has a lot of antique pieces and modern mixed together.

I had to laugh when I saw the rug she has in her family room. I have the same one. It's from Target.

I don't consider her home to be primitive, i think it has a few elements here and there but is definitely more what I call modern country. I think her home is a perfect combination of comfortable but yet just lovely.

I love the primitive look but don't have it all over my house. A piece or two here or there mixed in with other things. I just received my first Country Sampler magazine and I love all the designs that they show.

Depends what area or region of the country you live or reside in. Back east with all the history has many charming primitive looks. Out west, we are entirely different - very desert, Native American. I like the looks but I am not into collecting anymore or dusting the appeal.
