I go through hand helds like crazy. I got exasperated with my Shark (which I thought was my salvation) after only a couple months and trashed it in a fit of anger. I've also had Dustbusters and Dirt Devils. The filters on these things get so dirty you really can't clean them well. Then the suction is gone. I hate lugging around corded vacs for quick pickup jobs.
