A few weeks ago, I washed a bedskirt - and there were dark stains on it after I took it out of the washer. I used Shout-it-Out to remove the stains and put it in the dryer. Another stain appeared. A few days later, I washed a sheet set - and another stain appeared. I bought my GE Profile washer/dryer from Lowes 5 years ago - and purchased the extended warranty. A few days ago, a repairman came to my house and said the dark stains are not burn marks (as I thought) and claimed it's from my washer, which needs to be cleaned regularly by putting 3 teaspoons of vinegar in it and running it empty. The washer has the short agitator, and he told me to clean out the stains in the top of it. I did this yesterday -- and I also wiped out the interior of the washing machine. Today I washed 2 brand new sheetsets (bought at the Q last week) - and there's a black stain on one of the sheets. Has this happened to anyone? I'm not sure if it's the washing machine or the dryer doing this.

Not sure kivah what is causing the stains but I am interested in any replies you get. I have a Whirlpool Duet washer that is also leaving stains that I can't figure out where they are coming from. The stains I see are not black but sort of grease like, but not, if that makes sense. They show up on dark clothing after I dry them. So frusturating! I too have had a service man out and have cleaned my machine with numerous cleaners, on empty, multiple times. Will wait and see what kind of replies you get. Hope we can get both problems figured out. I am this close to going back to the old agitator type machine.

Anyhow, after trial and error I finally figured out that the blue liquid detergent and/or a combo of the blue liquid softner was causing the problem. I started using dye free detergent and softner and the grease like stains magically disappeared! Not saying that is your problem, but it's worth a try.

The repairman said I was using too much detergent - in my top-loading GE Profile washer. He said to not use more than 1 tablespoon of liquid detergent for a full load. I've had several male friends stay with me on-and-off during the last several months - and I'm sure they used too much detergent. The stains do look more like dark brown grease stains.

Thanks kjohnson for the suggestion. I have tried multiple detergents, from pods to different brands but never dye free. will try that next. I have also tried cutting back on detergent but never so little as 1 tablespoon. Will try that too kivah. I am just so tired of rewashing cloths. The service man assured me there is no way that it can be a grease leak of any sort within the machine. Ugh! Sorry kivah, didn't mean to hijack your thread. Hope we can both get it figured out.

I had the same problem a while ago. I started to make my own detergent and now I haven't had any problems at all. Google it. There are lots of sites with the recipe. A batch last me six months! Its worth a try!

Are you using dryer sheets instead of liquid softener?

I don't remember which brand, but dryer sheets were leaving marks in the drying cycle.

Of course, if it's there after the wash cycle, then I doubt that's the problem!

I don't know if your GE washer has this but I have a 4 year old Samsung front loader that has a specific cycle called "pure cycle". My machine indicates to me, about every 40 washes, that I need to run this cycle. It cleans out my washer so it won't smell and gets rid of lingering residue. Maybe read your manual to see if your machine has this also?
