For those, like me, who have been wanting to try chalk paint but don't want the expense of the famous brand, I found several homemade recipes. This lady tried 4 different recipes and ranked them from 1 to 4. The ingredients were easy to find and inexpensive. I am going to try her #1 and #2 ranked recipes. For what I am wanting to paint (not furniture) either should be fine. Let me know if you try them out.

http://salvagedinspirations.com/best-homemade-chalk-paint-recipes/

Please keep us posted after your try those methods.

I tried using crushed sidewalk chalk mixed with paint from a sample jar of interior satin latex paint, and while it looks ok, I found it impossible to crush the chalk enough that it wasn't gritty. It worked fine for my purposes, but I wouldn't really recommend it unless someone is just wanting to experiment on something.

I'll be able to buy some Plaster of Paris at my local Lowe's (her #2 ranked method), but for the #1 ranked method (which she used calcium carbonate-chalk) I will have to order online. I,too, thought about crushing up some of my grandkids sidewalk chalk, but figured it would be too difficult. Who knew they sold it in a powder form?

I think I'd go with the Plaster of Paris, too, mainly for the price and ability to find it locally.

What kind of paint will you be using? I read where the blogger says latex paint, but not what sheen she uses. I may have missed it, but that's all I read. Just curious to know if it matters.

I'm not saying I won't ever crush up more sidewalk chalk () because it does work, but the crushing part wasn't easy. I tried pill crushers, a rolling pin, and several other glasses, dishes, and pans I had around with flat bottoms.

At the bottom of her blog people were asking her questions and someone asked about the type of sheen she uses. She said she had used flat, satin and eggshell with good results. HTH

Thanks, CG. I didn't think about reading the blog comments for the information.
