PITTSBURGH LIVING ROOM

Designer Betsy Deiseroth lives in an 1870's, rambling, cottagey farmhouse, with a high-ceilinged living room that was added on after World War II.

It reminds me a bit of the Houston family room I posted, but THIS one is in my favored colors-- mostly dreamy greens and blues, a few light and deeper neutrals here and there.

It's also similar, in that Betsy is a devoted collector, like Sarah Eilers.

Love her fresh green walls--

The back wall was originally sliding glass doors, which she changed out to French doors, cleverly.

Another key improvement-- the original fireplace was huge rocks, painted white. She had them plastered right over, and then added the lovely wooden mantel for a timeless look.

She loves classic mattress ticking, which she used for the curtains, Roman shade and some upholstery. These windows were disproportionately tiny, so she did a nice designer trick. Where the Roman shade ends, that's the top of the window, but you assume the window is taller and more important than it is, underneath it!

A really chunky wooden curtain rod enhances the look--

Love the comfortable blue chairs and luxuriant rug--

And these pretty French chairs she had upholstered with blue flannel on the front.....

and her trademark mattress ticking on the back--

A prized old painting of Hong Kong harbor. Wing chair in mattress ticking in front, pretty gilt sconce on the wall behind her--

Closer in on one of the delicate sconces, with its cute teeny little shades--

She collects old silver-plated biscuit jars, here clustered on the coffee table:

They still get regular use-- she fills them with flowers for parties. Charming shapes and workmanship.

I like silverplate too, but never crazy about polishing! Some people find it relaxing....

A few quick glimpses around the rest of the house:

When they moved in, this was a den-- now it's a spacious entry hall, with a raised, tray ceiling, and striking burlap walls--

Her collection of iron Scottie dog door stops holds a casual meeting under a table--

Her favorite things in this entry are the pillows on the beat-up leather settee--

She fell in love with the Cowtan and Tout fabric with a dog on it, and had it made into pillows--

The kitchen is a breezy working kitchen, with chalkboard paint on a couple of walls--

She and her husband put in this beautiful stone patio and pergola--

She modeled the massive table on the one Peter Mayle wrote about in his books on his life in Provence.

Boy, this yard is enchanting!

One of my painting blunders was using a similar green that this designer usedon my LR walls. It was like living in an avocado. I changed it out fast. 🥑

It's not at all my preferred style but appears to be very nicely done. I would definitely have to repaint all the green walls though. I love the french doors and making the change from sliding glass doors was a great move.

I love that cottage and am ready to move in!! I particularly love the biscuit jars and window 'trick', it's one I used at our previous house. The house exudes western PA to me. . .

I like the exterior and the Kitchen is cute but I am not a fan of the interior decor at all.

I love the look of French Doors and we had them in our previous house. The problem is you have to keep the space in front of the doors free to open and close them. You need a large room. Plus the wind would blow them shut and I was constantly afraid of the glass breaking. I secured them with door stops and that didn't even keep them in place.

I hope the doors shown are not in a windy area because the 6 doors (3sets) would be a nightmare for me.

I am not a fan of the interior, although I do like the French doors, I do like the exterior a lot.

There is much appeal throughout the home. I love all the art work, tasteful and eye catching. I also like the furnishings , the blue chairs, the lovely rug, the decor displayed. Being a person who loves curtains, drapes,I like the warmth the drapes bring in and the wooden curtain rods are lovely. All in all I do like this home for many reasons!!!!!

I love all of the light fixtures in the living room; gorgeous! The wall of French doors is terrific. I like the green walls okay and I like the the blue pieces, but I don't like them together. Blue and green can be beautiful together, I know, so maybe it's just something about the shades that don't work for me. I'm also not crazy about the rug with the wall color. I think the mantle is very pretty and I love that she kept it wood rather than paint it. That really is a clever trick with the window treatments! I love the little chest vignette in front of the window; so lovely.

@CarolinaGirl88 , there is that old adage, "Blue-and-green, should never be seen!" It might indeed be the particular shade ( esp. of the green) that is putting you off, since you normally don't mind the combo.

As is often the case, I diverge from consensus Home Forum opinion. I enjoy the green in the living room, bringing the freshness of the outside in, to a quite traditional space. Find it lively. It's ever so slightly more saturated and intense than I like-- I like color, but it must be soft. But, what the hay. Her living room has so much personal dash, traditional style and coziness, that it's the overall feeling that hits me.

The burlap walls in her entry are a little too "warm" in tone for me, yet their texture and the overall charm of the room pull me along....

Her yard just bowled me over-- in the last two images, it seemed almost to sparkle, with an almost preternatural brightness.

One of my favorites, of all the recent traditional houses I've seen.
