But the added bonus is, It is only grown in the US,in certain parts of this country. California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas mainly . It is harder to find. But to me there is nothing better. It has such a silky feel to it. Of course a lot depends on how it it woven, and the thread count. Most of raw cotton is woven here, in Georgia, Los Angeles and the Carolinas. But, they can send the cotton abroad to be woven

Long staple is nice, but it also depends how it is twisted, spun and woven. Just like wool. No way to tell.

I bought a set of 1200tc Egyptian cotton from shop hq maybe 10 years or more ago and they were GARBAGE--in fact, I tossed them about 2 years later as they got holes in them . Now I had at least 10 sets of sheets for my bed---so they were not taken off to be washed and then put right back on--and before I tossed them, I even mended the holes!! So m not impressed with that kind of cotton---I still have sheets from the 70's that are in excellent shape--only softer and smoother and were not that type of cotton.

Bought a couple of sets of Northern Nights sheets abt 20 yrs ago which were advertised as Egyptian cotton, however I don't remember the thread count but likely were atleast 500 tread count. . One set had a scroll or Venetian design on them which are my favorite and have never pilled or disentegrated . They are light but not paper light . I find all the sheets with percale as being heavy ,They are in great condition , although I do rotate sets of sheets .

Unless they were synthetic blend. All Egyptian is not alike. It has to be longstaple, and the way it is woven is almost more important as the type of cotton. I prefer supima cotton, and Italian woven. Chances are the sheets you had were woven with decent cotton, but short staple. Which means, they take hundreds of threads and keep weaving. Not one continuous long strand. The short staples come apart where they start one thread and finish another...making little tiny holes in sheet after washing and little wear. I have bought Egyptian cotton sheets years ago, without knowing what to look for that was heavy, scratchy and a waste of money. It matters how they process the cotton, how they comb it, spin it into thread and how they weave it. I have learned for myself to buy only Sferra brand or a couple others. I am picky. Supima to me is the best cotton, and concidered the finest. But if not treated, and woven right it can be expensive junk
