OLD CONNECTICUT HOUSE

It's remarkable how many still-functional, centuries' old houses America has. This one is from the 1720's, in history-rich Litchfield, Connecticut.

The front door of the historic house is painted in Farrow and Ball's "Inchyra Blue"--

The old beamed living room is cozy and rustic, but also a little bit refined, with its classic English roll arm sofa. Love the inclusion of the eclectic leather director's chair too.

Just around the corner, is what the owners call the sitting room, with its massive hearth and granite lintel. The ancient posts are hand-hewn.

The sturdy coffee table in front of the fire is all ready with various games to play--

Look at those floor boards. Some in the house are of chestnut--

The kitchen's satiny, wide floor boards are also fab. I love the gray-green color chosen for the cabinets-- it seems so soft and natural in here.

This guest bedroom is one I'd love to stay in-- it also has the feeling of a comfortable library...

Another bedroom....

Honed marble is classic in a guest bathroom--

It's so nice to have the choice of a close-in patio, but also....

...a shaded eating area under a pergola and overlooking the rolling fields.

I enjoy the quirks in this house, the age, and the air of ease that the structure has, despite its history. It's easy to miss the detail and the interesting finishes in the "squinched-down" images posted here-- lightly double tapping the pictures in this case should make a difference.

It's true, there are many old houses. My friends house was built in 1645 in Salem, MA. I find it kind of dark and creepy. The ceilings are so low it feels claustrophobic. I'm never comfortable there. Nothing like the house posted here.

I like it but I would have to change some things....the furniture and the bathroom sink. I don't like to see exposed pipes.

I love a saltbox and I very much covet this house! There will always be things I'd change, but overall, this is just a wonderful, well done home.

So much to like here. But I just can't get past the low ceilings. All those windows help, but it still feels like a weight above.

Of course I wouldn't mind spending a weekend there just to check that theory...

Im glad people are keeping them away from land developers. They buy, they destroy and build ugly condo's.

My favorite parts are the kitchen - which I adore - and the outside spaces. The living room and bedroom feel claustrophobic to me because of the overhead beams. I absolutely love the outside spaces but I need in addition a section with shade.

I love the rustic, almost lodge-like look of the inside but almost none of the furnishings and decor items. The sitting room is OK and the outdoor pergola is a keeper.

Of Course I would change a few things decor wise but not much.

This is just not my style of home, but I will say, I do love the floors, all the beams and the huge fireplaces, and the outdoor area is very nice as well.

Love the beams, the posts and the floors - The kitchen needs a bit of an edit (I'd remove the flowers on the island and the baskets), but otherwise, I really like it too. ♥

The rest of it is too much "clutter" for me.

As a Nutmegger I can say this is very Connecticut. Although I love these historic homes, I have trouble getting past the low ceilings and numerous small rooms. However, this is a lovely home.

I used to watch Escape To The Country. English countryside.

English house interiors were/are similar to this interior.

I love this house.
