OLD APPLE FARM KITCHEN

Elisabeth Hipp lives on an old apple orchard in New Jersey. The house is a charmer, old enough that the kitchen is on the lower level, English-style, or "garden level", as she described it.

They did a lot of work here, but imagine having that wonderful old pine mantel and the beams to start with!

The fire was lit and burning away merrily. See her satisfyingly chunky Staffordshire dog on mantel--

The kitchen seemed to translate to still photographs that look darker than what the video showed. The room isn't as dark as this looks. But, I hope you can get an idea of how gorgeous and rich the mantel wood is--

Her Hitchcock chairs pull up to a vintage French bistro table--

Elisabeth Hipp put in butcher block counters and beadboard backsplash, wanting the charm of simplicity here. I like her built-in plate rack, and her cabbageware--

Right next door is their dining room, with its own fireplace, cheerful check curtains, seascape over the mantel. Strikes a warm, welcoming note, rather than formality.

A round table is so convivial!

Well, I was going to show just that dreamy kitchen, but why don't we skip upstairs and glance at a few other rooms?

Warning! More minimalists might get dizzy. Elisabeth is "traditional" with maximalist taste, so she's not 'in sync' with most posters here on the Home forum. She's even a little too layered for me. A bit of visual overload for me, especially with the proliferation of different prints.

That said, within her chosen style, she's happy, knowing and exuberant.

She chose a William Morris-style wallpaper for her entry.

She haunts thrift stores, charity shops, estate sales. Wish her antique rug in living room was more visible-- looks possibly Chinese Art Deco. The vintage brass trunk that is the coffee table is a prized possession...

Forget which pink she chose for the walls-- looks like a familiar Farrow and Ball paint color....

Her ceramic Foo dogs are so cute. She also collects pairs of English Staffordshire dogs and Rose Medallion china. I love those ethereal mirrored candle sconces--

The cozy TV den below was used as a first floor master bedroom by the previous owners. It's so desirable to have a flexible room like this on the first floor level, that you can later convert back to a bedroom if need be. A trio (I think it's three?) of her cutie-pie Staffordshire dogs in front of the mirror, and a few more on mantel....

But she and her husband chose to have their loft-like master here on the second floor. There is no solid wall between the room and the stairs, ( if there were, they could not bring furniture up), so she created the feeling of privacy with one of her antique screens--

I get the feeling of a hospitable bed and breakfast, or old countryside inn in New England, up here...

The only other room she showed up here, I think, is the adjoining study.

The study is snug, but comfortable and quaint, with its sloping roofline...

@Oznell sort of like feasting on items in a antique/ vintage shop! I feel like I'm in one. Each item curious, and interesting....just not in one place in a home I would love to live in! I do have that jacket somewhere in storage though. Looks like a 1990's Citron, or Nothing Matches. Lol

Too much visual overload for me. I just want to clear almost everything out so I can see the bones of the house.

And I had to laugh - I kept thinking she had a small dog in her arms. Then I realized it's some kind of fluffy thing on her jacket? OMG, that would drive me crackers. I'd be trying to brush it away all the time.

I do like the wall colors used in the rooms, especially the blue in the dining room. And the outside of the house, with the porch is lovely.

Very nice--would be fun to tour the place. But it is so dark!! And have to say--there is ALOT of stuff everywhere--can't imagine how much dusting there is.

Love the kitchen. I don’t understand people with huge kitchens and nothing on the counters.

I think I would like it if a LOT of the stuff was removed.

I do not know anyone that has had Butcher Block counters. I assume they get scratched and you just live with it. I think that would drive me crazy.

@bikerbabe I don't have much on the counters either. I like to look at clean, shiny clear counters. Lol! I have a small, antique bubble gum machine on a far end, then in cooking area of kitchen I have a SMEG coffee maker, and in a corner a deep red stand KitchenAid mixer. I am 78, don't cook, bake like I used to. We keep pressure cooker, slow cookers, big air fryer in garage pantry. The other stuff like blender, toasters are in kitchen pantry. Works good for us.

I like it. The house seems bigger inside than it appears from the outside. You're right that she has a lot of stuff, but it's organized in a way that doesn't make me uncomfortable.

I have always been a maxamallist , an antique lover, a person who enjoyed going to thrift stores, antique stores, all types of stores with retro items. I can appreciate this home and the decor throughout, the art work , furnishings. However, now I am working my way toward being a minimalist and trying to down size. . My taste hasn't changed, but now I am faced with so many things that must go!!!!

Bingo, @shoekitty ! I also had the feeling of a charming antique shop, and also the conviction that while I loved to look at her treasures, they would be too much to personally live with. I do like that she knows what she likes.

@spiderw , true, shedding some of the excess is sometimes necessary, rats!

@Oznell Absolutely charming....the house and the homeowner.

The only thing I would struggle with are the low ceilings because the home is so old. She has a wonderful and creative sense of style. Lovely!

Sure it's overstuffed and there are definitely things I'd change, but I like the overall vibe of this one, inside and out.

It could be really nice, and there are bits and pieces that I like, but it is visual overload-too much in each space..
