TRADITIONAL KITCHEN

With the renewed appreciation for all things traditional in design, some kitchens are showing tributes to long forgotten flourishes.

Enter the "sidesplash", visible at the end of the counter on the right. It continues the backsplash on to the adjoining wall. It even has an attractive swoop and curve to it, nice.

I do like the kitchen-- the wonderful floors, wood work table, brass wall lights, honed marble.

Something about the hood bothers me. Shouldn't it be slightly wider to align with the backsplash? Maybe that wasn't feasible, but it looks a little off to me. Opinions?

But, overall, I wouldn't sneeze at a kitchen like that.

The first thought I had was that exactly, @Oznell the backsplash and the hood are 'off'. But I love the overall look of that kitchen, is there a butler's pantry for storage?

The stove isn't centered between the two windows so the hood, while correctly positioned over the stove, is also off-center. I think someone messed up in designing the cabinetry and stove placement.

Very elegant kitchen. I love the floor.

I think @Marsha2003 called it- the hood looks weird because the stove isn't centered.

I like it too but mostly LOVE the work table as opposed to an island--I hear islands are out and tables like that are in.

Overall I like the kitchen, but the stove being unaligned would not work for me. I'm too picky. Also, I prefer a traditional island instead of a table.

Too many notes! To me it seems thrown together with no plan and little consistency. I like simpler and sleeker far better. This looks like they just used whatever and made it fit somehow.

I like the windows and that's about it. I prefer a warmer and more cozy look in a kitchen and most of today's cookie cutter, grandiose, kitchens don't provide that. I've never been a fan of islands. If needed, a work table is acceptable, but I prefer an actual kitchen table that can double as a work space.

I think that the hood placement keeps the kitchen from looking like building blocks. It is "off kilter" just enough" for me. I agree that a kitchen table looks and works better than the trendy islands. Overall. I like this kitchen.

I like it...except for the stove hood being off-center. And, though I may be in the minority, all those plants just add clutter to my eye!

I really like this kitchen and hope there is a dining table somewhere in the room.

I agree that the the stove would look much better centered but maybe if the hood was wider and extended to the left window as the right side is ...it would look better.

I agree @Oznell , I’m not a fan of the off‑center hood. My eye can’t flow; it just stops. I think a bigger hood would have helped. The rest of the kitchen is beautiful, it’s staged perfectly, the natural light is gorgeous, and the mix of marble, brass, and that checkerboard floor gives it so much charm. Everything else feels so intentional that the hood ends up being the one detail that throws the balance off for me.

I like an eating area adjacent to a kitchen, and we have one now. Our last house had one with a fireplace, which was great.

But my preference is a counter-height island that is across from the stove or cooktop. It is the best thing ever, you have all the room you need to prep and turn around and cook, and set all sorts of things on, wrap packages, park groceries, etc.

Ours now is two steps away, and has a bar height side on the back side which is nice, but I do miss my counter that was right near and I could walk around.

Me too, but I'd get rid of all the plants, except the ones on the ledge over the sink.

My impression is that the hood is centered over the range, the picture of the range wall is coming in at an angle that creates the illusion of being off center, the lower cabinetry flanking the range, one side mirrors the other creating a nice balance. Range hoods typically extend 3-6" on either side of a cooktop for best ventilation. I think if we were there in person the hood being set within the backsplash would create a depth and detail more appreciated than in the photo. I would extend the slab vertically and choose a hood that had contour shaping to mimic the sidesplash and soft lines of the sink.

I like this kitchen a lot and appreciate the counterpoint made by the soft curves introduced by the sidesplash, provides a little relief from what could feel too rigid.

I like the "furniture" island. They say built-in islands are on the down trend, while "improvised" islands are becoming more popular. I had a movable cutting block/storage island in my previous house. I have a permanent island here. It was necessary due to the size I needed for the space.

I think the black stove is awful. I would have chosen stainless or a light tone to go with the cabinets, ditched the pot filler and put the hood all he way across machine he cabinets.

I would also have put a center island to match the cabinets. Then things wouldn't have stuck out like a sore thumb. Or a least gotten a good cabine maker to make the stove be placed in the center of the opening. A real cabine maker and a stone finisher could have made it happen.
