CALIFORNIA TUDOR HOUSE AND GROUNDS

Pretty Tudor Revival design--

Interesting that part of the roof is thatched. Someone in the next town over from us, had a house built in a charming Cotswold cottage style, with a thatched roof. She had a thatcher from Britain come and do it, we heard. But a few years later, there was a conventional roof on it, so don't know what the story was.

Thatched roofs must be a maintenance nightmare, even if picturesque!

Anyway, back to this California house--

Beautiful gardens and stone-paved drive--

Love the convergence of old stone, flower beds and happy pup!

Now, the interior is beautifully done by Linda Floyd, but is heavily and darkly paneled in a number of rooms, not quite my favorite look. But here's a little glimpse of some of the lighter areas, quite pleasant--

I have always wondered about those roofs, so cool but are they practical? This has a lot of interest inside and out. I love this home. My first home I had built, and it had the most beautiful stone all on the front, with atrium windows and I added window boxes. I sure do miss that house, and this one with all the stone reminded me of it. And those garden grounds are heavenly.

Wowzers, I love this home! I adore Tudors.

Looks like a fairytale.

Love the windows and the stone walls are beyond gorgeous.

Beautiful, lush gardens.

That thatched roof looks really pretty but, like you said, I can't imagine the maintenance.....

Oznell, the grounds look idyllic.

The sunroom is glorious; I think I would live there.

I love the hallway but would eliminate the drapes that obliterate much of that glorious light.

Yes, the pup makes everything more beautiful.

Some trivia- The thatched roofs gave the start of the expression, "It's raining cats and dogs!" During good weather, the animals would go up on the roof for some warmth and comfort. Once the heavy rains began, the cats and dogs would leap from the roof. Looking out one's window one would exclaim, it's raining cats and dogs. No doubt some mice and other small critters jumped too.

Oh wow! The house itself is idyllic and that stone staircase is absolutely beautiful. I actually love the hallway drapes but I think they are maybe an inch or two too long.

Not really a fan of most of the furnishings but that sofa in the sitting room is wonderful!

Love the terrarium and botanical prints in the hallway but that throne-like chair in the middle? No thank you.

I think thatched roof would be impractical these days. Way back when they were common in some Europe countries. I cant imagine how much maintenance they would require, also creepy crawlies & critters would love it. I cant imagine the amount of spiders that would be nesting in them ( I would be running and screaming all the time.)

What a wonderful home, made me feel comfy just by looking at the photos. LOVE that stairway! Thatch roofs are so expensive, I can't imagine the cost of the insurance.

Oh, yeah I've always thought that the bugs, etc., would be a major deterrent from contemplating thatched roofs, even more than their fragility and need to be maintained. Have to believe that in modern times, though, there is a series of solid barriers between the thatch and the ceiling of the top rooms...

We suspected that the problems inherent in them caused the local homeowner to abandon hers for a solid roof. But it was so romantic looking while it lasted. We loved driving past it. It had probably been her dream...

@rockygems123 , this one's in Monte Sereno, CA, not far from San Jose. A Silicon Valley commuter town, I believe.

@luvzchiz , I never knew the origin of that expression-- fascinating!! Thanks so much for sharing that bit of information.

Like I said, the millwork inside is dreamy, but in some rooms comes across as a bit oppressive.

Example-- To me, while the woodwork is incredible in this office or study, yet, it feels a bit claustrophibic to me. But, you can't see the windows in this image, so maybe the effect is tempered by them.

Gorgeous...minus the roof.

I would change a few of the print fabrics to solids but the house itself is stunning.

OMG....that roof would house bird nests, mold, insects, rodents, bats, etc....it would have to go ASAP.

The house itself is very cool; the furnishings are another story. I think I'd start over.
