FOR CONTEMPORARY INTERIORS FANS

....but even I, more of an 'eclectic traditionalist', can appreciate the design choices shown in this house.

Interior designer Rebecca Robeson gives the tour with Jason, the homeowner ( who happens to have been very involved in her well-regarded design classes, and it shows). In this case, he did the interiors himself, Rebecca did not participate in the project.

He purchased the house in Tulsa during Covid, and has been working on it ever since, in his clean, modern design style.

His palette stretches from off-white, to charcoal, shades of browns and black. For the walls, to avoid 'sterility', he chose "Shoji White" by Sherwin-Williams, which is creamy, not stark. ( That's easier to see in the video).

Rebecca kept raving about the comfort of these Arhaus dining chairs. She dines at the house ( both she and Jason are pals from the days when both she and he lived in California), and she can attest to spending hours of comfort on these chairs at the dinner table!

The chairs are in a high-performance fabric Jason favors, so wine can be spilled on them, animals can romp, and no problems.

The ease of care aspect is very important, to him, if not to his precious rescue pups! ( I love the way they are wearing chic little sweaters in various pictures..)

Rebecca makes the point over and over, that Jason had a lot of space to furnish, and he combined both "high" and "low" elements for a seamless mix. The dining room chairs, table and chandelier, were the investment pieces, and the curtains and rug were the affordable pieces. The curtains were from Amazon, and a good thing too, since he has so many windows to address!

Rather than do a complete gut job on the formerly Tuscan- influenced kitchen, he painted existing cabinets, did a simple backsplash and used a handsome, raw edged stone for the counters. Love the thickness of the new countertops!

...to this. He considers it a limited, "moderate" reno, but to me it is a wowee, mainly b/c of that rich, thick stone, and carved sink!

One of his 'high' splurges, were these Arhaus counter stools. Love the lines and mixed media-- antique brass, with ebonized wood:

The coffered ceiling appears to have a stylish, wood-slat insert-- but Jason revealed it is a faux wood-slat wallpaper! Rebecca, who has been in the room a number of times, was completely surprised, thinking it was a warm wood touch. It's just another example of finding an affordable alternative.

It has streamlined furniture from Restoration Hardware, among others, and a handsome stone fireplace.

I like the way he changed the dark powder room...

...into something lighter and more organic, and installing the fixtures in the wall was a neat touch.

Rebecca was impressed by the master bedroom...

But she was so impressed by the master bath, that she withheld filming of it, and is going to make a separate video just of it. The charcoal or black feature wall here is "Iron Ore" by Sherwin Williams, which Jason has used in other areas of the house too, for a nice continuity.

This was such a good ( but long) video. I had to watch it in segments. It's filled with excellent tips, like creating symmetry where there is none. You don't need to favor modern interiors only, to enjoy all the info and design suggestions-- they apply to many styles.

This really is an elegant but comfortable looking home. I don't usually like modern but it doesn't look cold or uninviting. So many interesting things he has done.

Restoration Hardware was one of my favorite stores. I once bought some pewter leaf knobs from there and put them on my dresser.

Elegance and comfort and interesting details.

I love the house and again PWM - (people with money!!! ). It takes major cashflow to redo just one room. Had an estimate for new cabinets and countertops - 30K...my husband said looks like we be cooking in this old kitchen until we leave the planet 😆

Haven't really studied it, but first of all, someone needs to explain to me what that plank is doing adjacent to, but not part of the dining room table setup.

It's difficult to make out what's happening on that table.

It almost looks like there is exposed wood on the opposite side and that the tablecloth is more of a linen "runner" covering the center of the table.

It's a lovely property and the improvements are obvious. I take issue with some of the light fixtures and items on the walls but, overall, it's quite nice.

This bathroom, however, is unusable. I see these "sinks" all the time and, seriously, how does one brush their teeth or wash their face in such a small bowl?

As I've said before, I must have been a Labrador Retriever in a past life because, when I'm at the sink, I splash water everywhere.

This sink is a big no for me. Just not practical.

@SactoSue , the table top is all of a piece. Jason just has a slim runner going the length of his.

The pictures on the Arhaus site show this "Jacob" modern table better. It comes with either a solid walnut, or solid oak top, and an iron base, and was one of his splurges.

Ultra contemporary, but I rather like it for him, with his modern style.

@shoekitty , that's an excellent description-- that's how I reacted to it too, somewhat to my surprise. "Soft modern", when it concerns itself with being comfortable, can be soothing, as you say, and very liveable.

I love a good contemporary/modern interior but this was not quite enough for me. There are a lot of architectural details I noticed that aren't modern. I love the exterior but knew by looking at it that it would fall short.

His kitchen is beautiful and there are some other beautiful items throughout but I'd probably want to change out quite a bit. Overall, it's very nice...just not how I would choose to renovate and redecorate.

These are so much fun to "peak" inside. Thanks Oznell!

I know it's for staging, but I really hate seening tables set with dishes and glassware. All I can think of is dust and germs and that they'd all have to be washed again before putting them away.

White interior is not my preference - I spill too many things. I like a house that can handle a bit of wear and tear.

Interesting you should say that about the architectural details not 'matching up' with the modernity of his style, @shoptilyadropagain , and @kaydee50 . Valid point.

I too, wondered when I saw the sort of vaguely Mediterranean/ French look of the house, if I would like his contemporary touches. The arched windows and internal openings, kitchen, the fireplace, etc. are not contemporary.

Normally, I do like when the architecture of a dwelling is consistent with the interior design. But in this case I didn't mind-- I thought the occasional traditional aspects of the house further "softened" the modern elements. But that's my own bias toward traditional things showing!

I bet this RH showroom below is more your speed, with the windows, hearth and all the architecture making a more consistently modern backdrop, to the modern furniture and decor.

The powder room is both functional and a vignette at the same time. I like the primitive look there and the elements go so well together - the neutral colors, the round satin brass(?) frame mirror, the bronze(?) wall fixtures, the rounded live-edge wood countertop, the rustic (river rock?) bowl basin, and the gradient vase with the hole.

Overall, his home seems comfortable and he did a nice job. The house is in a beautiful setting - really like the greenery views, and the pond views.

It appears to me there is no slab of wood, just exposed wood from the DR table and the table has a runner down the middle, not a tablecloth. @Oznell Please correct me if I am wrong. I just don't seem to be able to identify a slab of wood floating around in the DR.

I think he should have graduated at the top of her class. I am not a big fan of every item and all the decor, but for what he wanted and his vision, he has done a splendid job. I have to say "I give him chops" for a professional result.
