Storage ideas

If you have moved from a larger home,to a much smaller place, what storage items , did you find that really helped, be closet, pantry,clothing ,garage ect.

I have used Periea storage containers for clothing/sweaters on closet shelves. I have also used pull out under bed storage containers from Amazon.

For some great storage ideas Google or on Amazon search for RV Storage Organization, there are literally hundreds of ideas, gadgets and containers. Good Luck with it! I just can't get to the point of getting rid of things!

We used tubs from Walmart and Target. They were easy for one person to carry and marked contents on the outside.

Also easy to stack anywhere until ready to empty them. Nested together when empty.

I use big, fiberglass-like IKEA zippered duffle bags I get on Amazon for storing excess or out of season clothing and linens. They take up much less space than a box or bin. Cheap and handy. Great for moving too.

Still trying to find ideas, wonder if using a very large ,deck box people use outdoors,would work in a house, for storing blankets, pillows in a extra room?

I found a storage bench to be an invaluable place to store pillows and linens in a guest bedroom. You might have to use a compression/vacuum bag to help all of the items fit.

I even have one inside the walk-in closet in my primary bedroom to hold bulky sweaters. It's a great place to sit to put on shoes and socks. I even use it as a surface on which to fold undies after they are laundered.

@goldensrbest - I like the "under the bed" clear plastic tubs. I purchased mine from Walmart.

Drawer dividers to help segment off sections. The limit of what we keep is the boundary of each section. Invested in built-in drawers, shelves & limited hanging space in our main closet. Also a boundary of what we can hold onto/acquire. Tip: in place of nighstands, we use small 3-drawer chests. Keeps the tops clear of "stuff" and lets us store things frequently used.

Pop-It Heavy Duty racks lined up side-by-side like library shelves (short end along the wall, not the long end along the wall) with weathertight totes for seasonal decor, pet supplies and emergency/storm supplies in the garage. More storage than we could ever fill & are slowly weeding through what we truly want to keep with each holiday.

Also invested in built-in window seats in two rooms for drawer storage. In the bedroom, for medical equipment, towels & bed linens. In the living room/dining room for table linens and blankets.

In your pantry, take a look at the depth of your shelves. Most pantry shelves around here are builder-grade, standard 12" deep. Re-did ours to 18" deep. We currently use multi-purpose bins for pantry storage (boundaries of what we can buy) for each cateogry -- breakfasts, grains, snacks, canned goods, etc. We also use multi-purpose bins in our freezer.

If you are thinking of storing that in something like a garage, beware that small critters (like field mice) can get into these. This happens with deck boxes with cushions that are stored outside, and it happens if the critter can get into your garage (speaking from experience) -- either through a crack under the door, a small space you area unaware of or if you leave your garage door up a lot for ventilation. They get in there and eat at whatever is stored inside to make their nests.

AKA...why we switched to exclusively using weathertight boxes. An investment, but not awful if you catch them on sale.

Tall, four-drawer metal file cabinets.

Find the deepest (measurements) file cabinets.

It's surprising the amount of storage in each drawer.

And they don't take much floor space.

I believe there are two types, one a bit wider than the other regular type.

I would choose the widest and deepest option, for maximum storage.

The larger capacity option of metal file cabinets is called 'Legal letter' option.

Slightly wider, yet much more interior space.

Again, also find the deeper depth options.

Just a few inches wider and deeper make a big difference, capacity-wise.

I'm guessing Amazon and maybe Walmart have free shipping.

Probably other websites and/or office supply stores, too.

I checked Home Dep*t, and they have quite a few metal file cabinets.

Problem is that the photos weren't visable on my laptop, and I wasn't able to access any of the options.

Also, a few other websites stated minor assembly required. I'm guessing it would mean just sliding each drawer into the file cabinet.

Full assembly would be nice, along with free delivery.

I'll try visiting Home Depot today. I'm also thinking of ordering another 4 drawer metal file cabinet. Legal letter size, for more storage space.

Maybe one in my kitchen (?). I'm thinking about it. Maybe in white, if available.

I had a shelving system from Lowes put on the one wall in my garage for all my seasonal decor. They were perfect and the bins fit perfectly on the shelves. I was able to clear out my attic.

I don't have a lot of excess blankets, etc. but I do have 2 pantries. I took plastic storage bins and have my baking pans, lock n locks and things I don't use often in there.

Slowly I've been purging my excess and donating (or trashing) what I haven't used. My clothing in the master walk in closet really needs attention🤦‍♀️😉 -- I stopped buying clothes and shoes!

I like those molded storage cabinets that shut tightly for the garage. The previous owner installed some basic kitchen cabinets in our garage. It's nice to have that overflow area, but we've seen evidence of mice inside them. You don't get that with molded storage cabinets, plus they are tall and hold a lot.
