SEASIDE VICTORIAN SUNROOM

Philadelphia designer Lucy O'Brien tackled a Victorian in Avalon, New Jersey, for a family that needed it tweaked for their needs.

It was this quirky sunroom that grabbed me:

The wood and windows are fantastic.

The room seems to turn a corner, and continue on, taking advantage of those lovely arched windows--

The bedrooms are fun too, and this one, high up, has a litte sitting room-

While Victorian is not my favorite style of house, and I shy away from much 'frill and furbelow', this renovation is so right for this house. Can imagine taking summer tea in 1890 in that sunroom, with ocean breezes coming in....

That's some house. Quite a project to take on decorating the entire thing.

I think it would be fun to rent for a summery month or so, but I couldn't live with all the matchy-matchy and the frills and furbelow.

Gorgeous! I love that house, the decor certainly suits it well but they are too 'foo-foo' for me. I had window treatments very similar to those in the sitting room, they were wonderful to look at but a real pain to arrange if one raised or lowered them! And I just flat-out hate that wallpaper . . .

My BF in Elementary-High School had a big Victorian House directly across from the ocean in Avalon. I spent most weekends and summers there for so many years.

It was the first house I was in that had a pass through fireplace..... Dining Room to Living Room. I fell in love with that feature and still love it.

This house reminds me so much of that house.

Lovely.

Avalon is a beautiful little town. That home fits there perfectly. I love everything about this house and the rooms. And that sunroom is just gorgeous!

I realize it's a seaside house I just feel the garage ruins the Victorian look . I love the windows and that sitting room with the patterns and colors . It's not my style prefer craftsman. I do appreciate all the details of a Victorian though .

@Oznell I also love the sunroom but would remove the curtains immediately as they are not only a bit much with the rest of the decor but primarily because they are robbing the room of more sunlight.

Love the hanging light in the sitting room and my favorite are the chairs around the corner from the sitting room and of course the precious pooch.

@DSD2 I agree about the curtains , they also hide the windows and light as you pointed out . Closes the room up as well.

I'm not much for Victorians, but somehow like this one, even given the front-facing garages, which are usually a deal breaker. Some might find the interiors on the fussy side, but I very much like what I see.

All that furniture and fabric and paint makes those small spaces look very cramped to me. But that's just me probably.

A Victorian house and decor are sure not my thing. I do like the exterior of the house though. I could never live with all those prints and ruffles in the sunroom. Those windows are absolutely beautiful but you don't notice them because of all the prints and ruffles.

I am in no way a fan of Victorian Homes, they are just too frilly for me, but this one is done very nice, I really enjoyed looking at the rooms. I would definitely remove the window treatments from the SunRoom as well.....

I am not a fan of windows being covered but after spending so much time in Avalon NJ in the hot Summer...window coverings are a necessity. It gets hot and very humid by the ocean in July and August.

I love Avalon and visit there every year in the fall. That house is modern Victorian style and is not a true older Victorian house. It is a fairly new construction and wasn't there in 1890.

This style is going up all over the NJ shore...Cape May, Wildwood, North Wildwood, Avalon and Stone Harbor....might be more places as well, but these I am familiar with.

I really love Victorian homes....the real ones, not the "Victorian style" homes. They just don't have the real feel....they look too modern.

While I do like the house, I could and would live there, most of those furnishings would have to go, especially in the sunroom.

IMO, the designer missed the mark. Those striped awning window coverings look like they were repurposed from the Mad Batter Restaurant in Cape May and the furniture is too much.

From what I can see of the bedroom, it looks great....just what is expected in a Victorian house at the shore.

I like the Laura Ashley look and find this room appealing. I also like the second photo with that nicely textured bricky block wall for added atmosphere along with the table and chairs, the corner windows and valances, . . .

Agree, @Kitty Galore, I don't care for the visual of the ground floor or loggia/ shed area being turned into a modern garage. I suppose that was one of the tweaks or concessions they felt they must make to their needs...

@Carmie , surprisingly, it is an old house, according to the House Beautiful feature done on the project. They described it as "circa 1900". That's why it was such a challenge for designer Lucy O'Brien, especially turning that third floor into something more liveable.

@QVCisFun , love your term "textured bricky block wall"-- that really drew me to it too!

Looks like something you would see in Cape May, NJ which is just down the road from Avalon. Avalon tends to have more modern looking homes.
