I have a complaint about the lighting on Y and R, esp. in the Newman ranch living room-- always seems a bit dark. I hope it's that, and not my eyes....

Recently re-discovering "The Young and the Restless" when down with a bug, and was struck by the sets. The Y and R thread here on the Q boards has been filling me in on the story line, and I started looking up the sets.

Didn't know that Victor and Nikki Newman's house in Genoa City had burned years ago. Apparently this is what it was like originally?

True to its era, ( 90's to 2010's?) it has an ornate traditionalism, with deep warm wall color. Maximalist, British-influenced, but almost with the Tuscan flavor popular in the very early 2000's.

I just read that they very recently finally rebuilt the living room that I've been seeing the last few weeks-- and it takes its cue from the earlier one, with a few key differences--

How cozy! Love the fireplace, which seems to be a darker wood than the earlier version. The room is even more "English country house", than the earlier one, with the tartan chair and pillow, blue and white chinoiserie, traditional candlesticks, etc.

Do you like that they lightened the walls? I do. I would have gone for an off-white also, but maybe with not quite the 'golden' undertone that these walls appear to have. But it's an improvement on the old color, in my opinion.

What do you think of the horizontally striped curtains?

In this particular room, which already has plenty of pattern in the pillows, rug and lovely table lamp, I probably would have gone with solid curtains, personally. But then, even though a traditionalist, I have a narrow range of patterns I can live with in a room. I like lots of solids, and a *little* pattern for interest....

I like the two blue and white ginger jars on the mantel. I only have two also, which I like to group together with a few smaller pieces. It looks like there might be a wee coordinating Foo dog or some other small piece of chinoiserie that they've put with it. The jars stand out with their gold tipped knobs.

The room might be a little on the "heavy" side, yet it looks appropriate for this 'dynastic' family with certain "aspirations" in their community, ha. It's a comfortable room in which to drink coffee with frenemies, and hatch elaborate schemes ...

The set designers seem to have a good handle on the characters.

Do you have any favorite TV or movie sets, that you think are well-suited to the characters who inhabit them?

I think the rooms appear a bit cluttered, to much stuff on the walls. JMO. I used to watch that show on a daily basis years ago. I stopped watching when I retired in 2016 so it's been on a long time ! That was one of my favorite soaps

Oh, that "Bewitched" house was a beaut, @rockygems123 ! Love it also. It had a real warmth to it, and I attribute that to talented set designers too. A while back I posted Marina Coates' computer re-creation of the "Bewitched" house, which you might have caught. The neat thing about her site, is that she takes old shows, with great sets, like "Bewitched", or the "D ick Van D yke" suburban midcentury house, or "The Jeffersons" city apartment, and re-creates and analyzes them.

I was amazed at how much they changed the Bewitched sets over the years of the series, yet the house always seemed comprehensive and cozy...

Yeah, @Goodie2shoes , true, they were definitely going for an "embellished", object-heavy look in the Newman living room! It does seem to suit them. Y and R seems to have a big budget for their sets!

Back in the good old days when Y&R was actually entertaining, I thought the old Newman ranch and the Abbot home were both lovely. After the ranch went kaput and a new home was built, some of the sets weren't as appealing, though a recent 're-do' of the Newman living room, which was pretty much all we ever saw, was attractive. The new Newman ranch is reminiscent of the original, if not exact, and I do like the set a lot, but, like others, do find it just a bit cluttered. I also dislike the red and white curtains. While perhaps 'on trend' they don't fit with the room nor with the notion re-imagining the original ranch. I seem to have noted that recently, they were pushing them back, so perhaps they're on their way out.

I see they've also re-upped use of the tack house set, one of my favorites and that Billy has been given new digs. His are sort of MEH... I believe Adam was supposed to move into the recently vacated Newman house, but don't know if that's happened yet. I do enjoy that Y&R generally has very nice sets, but would also like to see them funnel some funds into better writers.

Oh, that explains a lot, @stevieb -- thanks so much for that informative "exegesis" on the saga of the various dwellings!

I'm somewhat confused as to how many properties comprise the 'compound' of the "Newman ranch". ( it's funny to me, by the way, that it's called a ranch, as if it were a huge spread out in Montana, instead of in the vicinity of Genoa City, Wisconsin...). It almost seems like dozens of characters live here and there on the property...

Am guessing that the house or cottage where Claire gave Jordan the poison, is where Claire normally lives, also on the ranch.

The woman with very strong cheekbones, whose son has OCD or something, she's moving to the ranch, presumably to be also in some satellite dwelling? Surely not in the main house.

Now I want to see the tack house.

On the most recent episode I saw, Billy's place had been just redecorated by Sally, and he went bonkers over its new look. I kept wanting to get a closer look at it, but the camera refused to give the sweeping inspection I wanted!

I do think the refreshed living room in the main house is a really good fit with the general aims of the Newmans to be heading toward a comfortable respectability, at least on the surface. Agree that a little pruning would help, but otherwise, a cozy refuge from the battering world they occupy, perhaps....

@Oznell I 'drive by' more than I watch these days so someone might well be more up to date on the dwellings...

The ranch tack house appears to be where Clair and possibly Victoria are living. It's been sort of a temporary refuge for just about everyone, but I enjoy the cozy, farm-like ambiance, though it's had several iterations.

Sharon is ensconced in what I think used to be referred to as the gate house on 'the ranch'. It was fixed up and given to her and Nick many, many years ago as a wedding present. The marriage has had its ups and downs but the cottage goes on and on.

The main house is the one recently re-imagined and transitioned from a different main house Victor and Nicki resided in after Sharon torched the original main house but before Victor built the new house for his lady love.

I've yet to get a solid look at Billy's new digs but from what I've seen, no big deal.

The Abbott mansion is elegant and classy but some would probably consider it, too, to be a bit cluttered.

The old Chancellor house was pretty in an 80's traditional sort of way. It was modernized a few years ago but, to me, looks sort of unfinished.

The Athletic Club and Society are the two somewhat elegant dining spots and the AC is also a hostelry.

Are you sure it was Mrs. C, or could it have been Vanessa Prentiss (played by KT Stevens), mother of Lucas and Lance Prentiss, from the very early days? Lance, incidentally, was initially played by John McCook, now Eric on Bold and Beautiful. Vanessa had been burned in a fire which was why she wore the partial veil face covering.

Great pictures of Mary's beautiful apartment. At night she would pull out the sofa sleeper and that was her bed. I remember when she upgraded to a one bedroom new apartment that was not nearly as charming the original apartment.

The set is relatively new, but I know Nikki loved it when Victor brought her in for the reveal. The window treatment is one thing I'd change. I understand that sets are small, and dollars limited on soaps, but it seems millionaires only have room in their living rooms for a sofa and a few uncomfortable side chairs. However, when I compare this set to Bill Spencer's on Bold & Beautiful, this one has a real feel to it.

Regarding other TV sets, I loved the Leave It To Beaver house after they moved to a newer house. The living room was spacious, and had a small game table tucked away. Plus, they had a den! The Bewitched house was another favorite, and I couldn't believe how big the Family Affair apartment was(4 bedrooms and a den). I'd love to know what building it was supposedly in, and check out the rents nowadays.
