OLD GATE HOUSE

Not sure where it is, but designer Ashley Gilbreath is southern, and the house looks to be also. Actually, "gate house" is rather appropriate, because the house seems to have many entrances, through the generous French doors on several sides. The stateliness of the house is tempered by the garden-like, "pavilion" feeling produced by all the windows and French doors....

She's traditional, and brings in interesting global touches to keep things lively, like these bold, artisan baskets...

Spacious breakfast area/ great room, again with its own doors--

Love the way the beautiful architecture continues in the kitchen--

Have mixed feelings about this chandelier with its graphic lines. I do like her use of screens to delineate spaces, like in this sitting area. Also love the enlivening starburst, generous coffee table, pottery, and witty, oversized botanicals.

Reclaimed touches abound, like these gorgeous weathered doors...

Corner of a study?

Even in a classical bedroom like this, she has softening details like the shimmering, clear glass lamps.

The other end of the room is relaxing too--

Charming smaller bedroom.... Her textiles are spot on!

The inviting porch has the southern "haint blue" ceiling, plus faithful canine keeper of the house....

A lot to love here, for me. The breakfast area/kitchen/great room are favorites, and of course, the lovely, inviting porch and sweet dog.

A lot to love here. It is very open and airy and charming. I do not care for the chandelier, but most everything else is spot on and very pretty.

I am not sure why but I have a sense of dejavu with this house. I love the house but some of the lighting fixtures are not my taste. I love the porch and would need to be searched when leaving because I adore those botanical prints!

There are some absolutely beautiful furniture and decor pieces here but, overall, I find it's too vanilla for me. My favorite rooms are the kitchen and that second living/sitting room although I'd still tweak it some. I loved all the windows and french doors!!

I absolutely do not like the breakfast area and great room. I don't like bench or, in this case, sofa seating and prefer having my own chair. The great room furniture reminded me of thrift store finds (althought it did have a little more color than a lot of the house).

I think it's beautiful! I don't love the kitchen because although the cabinetry is grey, it still comes off as a "white kitchen." I think some of the other rooms could use a bit more wall color also, but overall I like the house very much.

I do like the spaciousness of the rooms. There are some things in the house I do admire,

the French doors, the wood pieces of furniture, the drapes. I do think the kitchen is lovely. The furnishings do not appeal to me and on the whole the rooms lack warmth and I would add color.

I love "older" homes. Love to know the history behind them. Remember, I'm the one who likes to look in the windows of people's homes when possible. I get it from my dad.

I really like the decor in this house, the primitive touches of baskets, furniture and organics combined with contemporary touches. The over-all effect is comfortable, light and airy.

Some of the rooms are too white. I'd add some color to the kitchen, living room and bedroom.

All of those beautiful windows and doors, such marvelous light.

How wonderful and sunny the great room is. I would have all my meals there.

The child's bedroom and inviting porch (and dog) are other favorites.

I' m packing my bags and when I get there I am getting rid of the old worn doors or will refinish them. Other than that I'll not have much to do.

I know this house and it was in a formerly in a very beautiful old part of town. That area has been brought up to and beyond the standards it once enjoyed in the 1950s. I don't live there but did in the past.

I know I have mentioned several times about the home of a friend and the luncheons she enjoys hostng, especially at Christmas, for friends.

The home I have mentioned which is so gloriously beautiful, the same architecture firm designed her home as this one (where my friend's son is an architect). The bar of my friend's house is very similar, but much larger. The porch area and the many glass doors and windows are similar.

My friend's house has more traditional furnishings, decor and collections from the wall of cyrstal and silver to the many Persian, Asian and African rugs used throughout. What is especially different is her solid French blue library with the soft pink cloud sofa from Restoration Hardware and her use of the old with the very edgy new is wonderful. My friend's elevator is mirrored. Her husband who traveled with several politicians (journalist) has his own man cave with all those photographs and memorabilia from his career. Otherwise, this home and my friend's home are so very similar. I guess it has the stamp of the being from the same architecture firm.

I like this house as is. I find it warm and welcoming, open and airy, bright and clean looking...and the chandelier is very different which adds interest to the room so I would keep it.

@Oznell I love the "bones" of this home. So many French doors and windows that bring in light. Some furniture is okay but I would replace a lot of it with my own style. I could live here very easily.

I have never heard of "haint" blue porch ceiling paint. I took a deep dive down that rabbit hole and found it fascinating. I have a huge group of first cousins that live in Virginia. They all have kids and their kids have kids. I was wondering if any of their grandchildren has followed the "haint" blue porch paint tradition. I have sent an email to a few of them tonight to see if they do.

Learn something new everyday here. I like that. I love to still learn.

Haint blue actually came to the Americas from African women who believed that it kept spooks and ghosts out.
