Nicole DelaCruz has a style that seems to lean neutral/ modern, judging by her family living room and other spaces-- but in her sitting room, she went very "glam". It's not my style, but it's fun to analyze how others design for themselves.

Before anything else, she had fallen in love with this art work that she found at High Point Market, and decided the room's colors would all flow from it:

The colors from the art were: pink, (she went for the deeper end of pink), deep blue. The neutrals were the silvery gray, off-white and a bit of black. There was a little gold in the print, as well as the silver, so she liked the idea of doing both metallics, the silver and the gold.

So she created this "mood board", as the first step in her design process:

Have you ever put together a board like this, before a design or re-do of a room? With paint chips glued on, art as source of color inspiration, fabric swatches or little bits of wallpaper, photos of the rug, etc., possible sketches? Her board is really complete, since it also shows the finished room after all was said and done.

I've never done a mood board, but I remember my sister doing it, with little swatches and I think tiny wood flooring or tile samples, etc! She was very artistic.

I have used art as inspiration, but in a kind of vague way. My mother had given me a set of four watercolors of Paris street scenes, framed, with a moody blue color predominant in them.

I'd always wanted a sky blue or robin's egg blue living room to put them in, so in this house, I slowly realized that would be the wall color in the living room-- and that's what we did.

If you have done a mood or "idea" board, or have used art or fabric as your inspiration in a room, please tell all about it!

I have a different sense of style and I don't care for those colors and styling pieces.

As for design boards: I learned that the designer recommended by my contractor for a kitchen and later, bathroom and living room remodels was worth her weight in gold, platinum and every rare earth metal !.

She and I had some confusing conversations about the kitchen when I told her I had already bought the granite counterrop I loved, and she initialy misunderstood where I was going with it.

Once she saw it, she changed her thinking completely and did a divine job of sourcing the colors, textures, and finishings that pulled it all together in a way I would never have considered. She is a star and I would have no reason to do my own vision board when I saw what she accomplished.

It's interesting that most of us, including me, have NOT had mood boards; even though those responding here (and I as well) tend to be keenly interested in design.

Sounds like we tend to be "intuitive" in our approach-- there may be an analytical aspect as well, but it is more in service of what we "feel" is right for a room. "Winging it" as @spiderw put it, can be an inspired approach!

@GingerHead , thanks for showing your lovely crackled tile. I also love the lilt and rhythm of arabesque tile-- I chose it as my kitchen backsplash!

@Oznell - I love art and have paintings on my walls, that are mostly scenes from nature, featuring ocean waves, or flowers growing near water or in a field, along with some portraits and a couple of street scenes. I have never made a mood board to develop a particular color scheme to go with my artwork in any room, but I sure did paint a large number of different greige colored paint samples on my walls to see what my framed paintings would look like against those varying neutral shades of wall paint. It took me a few weeks to determine which colors worked best in those spaces in different lighting conditions from morning to night. I was kind of obsessed with making the right wall paint choices.

My furnture style is kind of classical to neoclassical, in medium to darker shades of wood, so my tables, bookcases, sofas and chairs work well with my paintings of people and nature scenes. My walls in different rooms are creamy shades of warm taupe, less toward the gray than toward the brown. While the colors I selected are different in my office, living room, family room, and kitchen, they all work in a coordinated fashion, together, with some being lighter in hue than others. My paintings look great against those hues of greige.

I purchased art glass table and floor lamps from my favorite store in New Hope, PA, a few years before they closed their doors forever. What a loss to New Hope. What a magical store that was -- Topeo. I purchased one table lamp with a green glass (with swirling speckles of brown and cream) shade for my living room, and a table and floor lamp for my family room with matching deep brown and cream swirled shades. I was drawn to one of the exciting red glass table lamps, but the owner of the store convinced me not to stray from the more neutral colored lamps for my home. He was so right about that, and I have no regrets.

I am not drawn to modern art or modern furntiure, so I would be lost trying to decorate or coordinate the colors in such a home, but it is quite interesting that even Nicole Delacruz decided on neutral wall colors for her modern art. I do think that a room works best when the artwork colors do not clash with the wall color, furniture color or style, drapes/window coverings, or flooring.
