Nice to be quilting again

The colder weather has me quilting again. It is a great winter hobby. This one is half finished.

I haven't quilted in such a long time. I doubt if I could thread those tiny needles. I have the round lap hoop. Is this done by hand? Your stitches are perfect.

Absolutely beautiful work! I love that you do this; it seems like an almost lost art. We have some very old quilts that my great-grandmother made. Some are over 100 years old now. I really treasure them.

@Kachina624 I love the colours too. Yes, we will be away for a month this year. I started this one early because we will be travelling. We starting off with real winter weather. Just had a nor'easter yesterday and they are calling for more Christmas Eve so it is perfect quilting weather. My hands are toughened up again so it goes faster.

I have a friend who is great with a machine. She quilts by machine. She is a teacher. I keep telling her we should create a story quilt together. It's on the list when she retires. Her MIL is very talented and hand quilts like me.

@Carmie I have to carefully watch the navy stem and leaves on this quilt. It is very difficult to catch a loose thread on this colour. I need to keep checking the back. Nothing worse than discovering a mishap long after it is done. It's hard to correct because the thread is cut fairly long...you have no idea where it begins and ends.

Easier to see mistakes on lighter coloured fabric if that makes any sense 😊.

@CarolinaGirl88 Over the years, the number of fabric shops has been declining. I ran out of thread Friday and actually managed to reach my DH who was in the City and got him to pick up a new spool. Imagine going through a winter storm with nothing to quilt!!! DH and shop attendant to the rescue! She had it waiting for him to pick up.

Your reply about working from the back made me search my memory about my grandma's quilting. Sad to say that I didn't notice.

I understand what you are saying. I do hand sewing and there is nothing worse than being done and noticing long threads on the back side of the fabric...sometimes in a knot.

Occasionally, it doesn't matter so much, but in a quilt where both sides matter it's important.

Anyway, your work is perfection.

@Still Raining When I look at quilts, the first thing I do is turn it over to see the back! That tells how good the quilter was.
