ONE FAMILY'S CHARLESTON CHRISTMAS

Glam Pad featured a young Charleston blogger and her family as they celebrate the holiday. Thought it was sweet.

Here is Jillian Eversole at her mother's home with her husband and boys--

The kids' grandmother has personalized mugs for everyone--

A wonderful collection of Christmas enamel Battersea boxes on a silver tray with Santa--

A little child would find those colorful, pretty boxes mighty fascinating!

It looks like it is warm enough to eat on the verandah!

Christmas books on display... has anyone read Capote's "A Christmas Memory"? The movie was great too.

Then, back in Jillian's own home--

A grandmother and some aunts needlepointed the Christmas stockings--

I liked the dining room table setting . I also liked the green patterned chair upholstery and coordinating green placemats .

The old fashion dried orange rings were nice

If you can, see the Capote story in the version with Geraldine Page. I cry and cry when I see that. My beloved uncle and I flew kites. I can cry thinking about it. They are all gone now.

I hope this beautiful family have a beautiful like together in that lovely home. It's all dream worthy.

Not really a fan of this one. The first photo of the family is nice. I like the hand made stockings and the porch.

The dining table, chairs, and dinnerware are way too busy for me with all their competing prints. I don't care for the floral drapes and all the oranges.

Their tree reminds me of years past Christmases. Is that the old fashioned tinsel that you kind of just threw on the branches? I actually really like that look..It fits this tree perfectly.

That's a cute family but I'm not fond of her mother's decor choices (colors, prints, etc.). However, unlike @wilma , I do like the oranges incorporated with the Christmas decorations. I'm not sure why as it doesn't really say 'Christmas" to me but I do like it.

@Sooner , that's what immediately grabbed me too! My Dad and I loved to fly kites, whenever the weather would cooperate, which wasn't all that often! But such an exhilarating feeling-- running with a kite soaring above...

Come to think of it, you must have had ideal kite conditions, in Oklahoma, with the wind and the prairie.

Saw the Geraldine Page version - loved, loved it, cried buckets as well. That little boy too. The kite, and oh the fruitcake. He and Sook going all over hill and dale gathering the ingredients, baking, and then sending the luscious cakes to the White House ( I think?) and to nice people they had met at random...

Adorable family! Not a fan of the decor but not sure if that is her mom's decor or hers...not that it matters. Love some of the pieces but to me ther are too many pieces! LOL!

Oh, forgot to mention, @shoptilyadropagain . It goes back a long way, but oranges and other citrus have long been associated with Christmas. It might be more of a British thing, or colonial America thing, I'm not sure.

People would stud oranges with spicy cloves ( pomander balls) for decoration in bowls. And they did slice them and dry them and string them for garlands or put in potpourri.

Oranges were once considered a great luxury, esp. at Christmas time. My Dad, who grew up very poor after his young father died unexpectedly, was thrilled to get an orange in his Christmas stocking from his English mother.

Simpler times!

@Oznell I do think I remember seeing oranges being studded with cloves but it was something you would rarely see when I was growing up. I haven't seen or thought about those in years. I think my parents (my mom specifically) talking about getting an orange in their stocking when she was growing up but her parents were dirt poor and I think stockings were just filled with excess items her parents had on hand at the time.

That's true, @shoptilyadropagain -- I didn't see oranges that much as decoration much as a child-- but they seem to have 're-surged', especially lately. Everything old is new again!

Very nice and interesting to look at. Lots there---for the cameras of course---but I like the old fashion theme. Am sure most of the things are put back in storage afterwards--to keep little hands form loving it all too much.

@Oznell Our Shakespeare Festival has presented that with professional players several years and I like taking my grandchildren to see it because it is very impressionable. I, too, cry.

After a few years their feature became the Dickens classic and they loved that too as young teens but I do love the play with Sook and I think "going over the hill" with the bukckets gathering Christmas ingredients for baking is so, so memorable and children can learn so much from it (as well as adults).

My husband who was the product of a long line of orphan families that struggled during and after the Depression, told me he was thrilled to get an orange as his stocking stuffer. One time he got a dog for his big Christmas. Sometimes an orange was a great treat and one year, his father a sharecropper, had good crops and he got a pony. We had normal Christmas gifts, like dolls and as a teen, I got clothes. I almost cry hearing the stories of his life but they are real and they are sweet.

Back when my mom was growing up during the depression it was common at Church Christmas times to give out small brown paper sacks with hard candy, a few pieces of chocolate drops, an orange and maybe a small toy. These sacks were twisted and twisted at the top, not folded over.

When they quit doing this at church we would make the sacks and give them to people who came to the door. People loved them--especially the ones who remembered them. Even up until the 1990's my husband and I would make a big basket of these to hand out.

Oh and I grew up in the mountains (small) of northeast Oklahoma, so wind was sort of a rare commodity. Funny because the setting of the famous Steinbook book The Grapes of Wrath was set in the eastern part of Oklahoma, not really the prairie dustbowl part.

Oklahoma is an odd state: swamps and even some 'gators and mountains in the southeast and hills in the east. Ancient mountains south, prairie north central, and desert like in the far west in some places and high mesa in the far northwest. Take your pick! Southern, Hillbilly, Midwest, Cowboy, or Southwest culturally!
