Nice, subtle contrast piping on the couch, and the pillow has the same print as the banquette in the corner.

Mysterious, brooding landscape painting!

I usually love the acclaimed CeCe Barfield Thompson's designs. This one, there are things I like, and don't like. Can you stand a 'micro - review' of the room? Feel free to dispute any opinion of mine, and/or add yours.

LIKE:

The calm, relaxed feeling, even in a sophisticated NY pad.

DON'T NECESSARILY LIKE:

Just my personal taste, but her brown, while rich, is too "golden" for me. Esp. the couch. What would you call it-- cognac? "Topaz"? ( At least the names sound sumptuous, ha). Move the shade a few notches "cooler" to cocoa, taupe, chocolate, etc. and would love it.

LIKE:

She confines herself to one, superb collection-- the antique celadon porcelain on top of the stunning armoire. Like most celadon, they uplift the whole room, bring color and history in, and glow softly up there...

NOT LIKING:

The sculpted rug. Can just imagine how a soft, worn Indian or Turkish rug would temper the formality, and give just that extra 'color jolt' needed. I'm fantasizing her client insisted on the more "regular", neutral and boring (but no doubt expensive) floor covering.... It almost looks like it could be jute or something like that, as opposed to wool, but whatever it is, it's too "regimented".

LIKE:

The chaise by the window. Looks inviting and almost casual, esp. with the patterned throw on it.

LIKE:

The intimate corner with the banquette and lovely circular reeded table. What a great place to congregate, dine or just hang out.

The delicate and sprightly chintz on the banquette is just what the room needs. Love the way she pulls out the slate-y blue of the print, in the blue chair and vase. The portrait is a quirky and amusing touch.

LIKE:

I know this sounds nutty, but the pair of drip-glaze table lamps in the room are almost my favorite thing. The way that irregular warm 'toffee' color spills down the creamy lamp base, picking up the other predominant brownish color in the room, love!

Also like the cone shaped shades on all the lamps, strikes a clean note of modernity.

A few other areas and rooms --

Love the old map. And there's a soft blue again...

Elegant lacquered merlot walls in powder room--

Mmm, more rich warmth.

Is this a bar, or a breakfast nook or ?? I like the way the smoky mirror looks with the warm wood...

The bedroom continues the calm, restful feeling, but in a way that is cool and refreshing...

Like: the height of the room

Don't Like: the rest.

The living room isn't an ideal place for chaise if one has guests. Who'd sit there other than the resident? 1 person? Would they lie on their back on the chaise? There's no back otherwise, so no support. A big waste of seating space.

Like: the bedroom location of the other chaise in the bedroom

Don't Like: the flowers in the powder room

I like the bedroom-very peaceful and pretty, serene. That shade of blue is very calming to me.

I also like the entryway with the mirror.

I don't care for any of the rest - just not my style at all.

Very interesting place. My favorites are the entry and the bedroom. I like a lot about the living room, too. I think it's lovely, but would prefer a printed rug to add some color- maybe greens? The powder room is pretty; quite "fancy," though. I'm not a fan of the kitchen/breakfast nook area.

Nice warm tones, but I'm not a fan of the kitchen or breakfast bar. Don't like the counter tops or backsplash at all!

I pondered the personality of each room respectively, and found the beautiful, yet quaint bedroom with its cool tones to hold my favor!🙂 The strategic placement of the vase with just the right amount of lilac floral presence made the space quite welcoming! I would absolutely LOVE❤️ to spend a night there!🥰

There are SO many interesting elements in the other rooms, but the color schemes are not my favorite.😁

The first shot of the somewhat formal sitting room, appears to be similar to something you would find in an upscale hotel, décor supplied by Decorating Den. It is almost likeable if you add art and flora to the cold, almost puritanical room. But WAIT. It shifts to a banquette which, tries without success. It looks to be an unwanted wedding gift that the owner could not refuse. Perhaps later find fabric at the marketplace, upholster the banquette, paint the legs to blend with the dark, moody colors otherwise. The waffle pique rug appears to have been an afterthought. Someone threw one of the rent-a-banquette matching pillows onto the expensive sofa. I like the use of celadon atop the armoire, a well-thought-out wedding gift. The map, the mirror and lamps make a nice entry and quite in tempo yet warmer than the sitting room, save the banquette. The “lava room” is lovely and perfect. While I am not a fan of the marble used in the kitchen, I like the lightwood cabinetry. The bedroom definitely looks like a room in which I have spent nights, maybe Charleston Place, the Biltmore Hotel or the Monteleon. Yes, it does have the Decorating Den touch.

LOVE the bedroom, the beautiful blue hues, the wallpaper, the desk and charming flowers. Perhaps the room is slightly bigger than it appears from this viewpoint? There may be more room for the chaise lounge than it appears but the bed takes up most of the room.

I also like the hall with the map and the pretty lamps, mirrors table and tulips.

I agree about the couch @Oznell it is a "muddy" brown and not attractive. The "mystery" picture detracts from the room; the drapes seem "heavy".

I dislike the kitchen which has too much packed into too small an area and loathe the countertops/backsplash. The bar area does nothing for me either.

This entire space is like a work of art. Every vignette a great composition.

Colors are stunning. I know bright colors are a favorite, not for me. These colors are so peaceful and soothing.

@Oznell , interesting! I love the ceiling height. That rug is just awful though and the painting would have to go. Not liking the chaise in the LR or its placement with the back to the sofa. I would turn it facing the sofa. Just doesn't seem to fit the room.

The powder room is way too dark for me but I like the sink profile.

I love the banquette and the bedroom.

I could live here!

It's very pretty but it's too formal for me! I am a very casual person and I like kind of country or more laid back kind of furnishings in a home. None of these things look particular comfy or inviting. It looks more for show, not for living.

Interesting space. As someone who tends to comment on overall vibes rather than individual aspects, my criticism is that this apartment feels a little too "serious." Does anyone get what I'm saying?

I will make one specific observation however. I don't care for the wall art.

I had a feeling this one would be sort of a Rorschach (sp?) test-- and it kind of is! Fascinating range of opinion on this one.

Love it when posters do a deep dive, explaining what they like or detest. Even when I disagree, it is fun and very illuminating. Thank you all for taking the time to analyze.

@Desert Lily and @Lilysmom1 , interesting analysis of the living room chaise. @Lilysmom1 , agree that it would be superior to have a chaise that angles in the other direction, toward the couch...

And @Citrine1 , that fringe you picked up on is one of the things that helps soften this room for me. You and I are in a very small club of posters here who like deep fringe, yay! (Used in moderation.)

@Nonametoday , ha, ha, the "Decorating Den"-- I haven't thought of them in ages! Ouch, I bet the rarefied CeCe Barfield Thompson would be 'surprised' by that comparison....

The apt. is a little bit of a departure from her usual slightly more colorful and gently frolicsome, English-influenced take on things. Here, I thought the mood was a sort of controlled urbanity, which could come off as "somewhat generic hotel room" I suppose. But I think she stops short of that, with her delicate touches, art and luxuriant finishes...

@faeriemoon , I do get your critique of it being "overly serious", and I think that that's what some other posters might have been getting at too, with some of their comments.

As a general reaction, I'm a little surprised at the widespread dislike of the kitchen. I thought the vitality of that marble, with its wonderful "movement", is such a great counterpoint to the warm wood....

It's still that soulless rug that takes the most points off for me.
